Excellent high school text

Used this in our homeschool. Good explanations and diagrams. End-of-chapter questions are thought-provoking and lead to good discussions, most about current events. Makes your student think about 'the real world' of science not just as another academic requirement for graduation. My version is 10 years old but didn't find any glaring errors. (I was a biology major in college.)

In 1997, Philip Roth won the Pulitzer Prize for AMERICAN PASTORAL. In 1998 he received the National Medal of Arts at the White House and in 2002 the highest award of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the Gold Medal in Fiction, previously awarded to John Dos Passos, William Faulkner, and Saul Bellow, among others. He has twice won the National Book Award and the National Book Critics Circle Award. He has won the PEN/Faulkner Award three times. In 2005 THE PLOT AGAINST AMERICA received the Society of American Historians’ prize for “the outstanding historical novel on an American theme for 2003-2004.” Recently Roth received PEN’s two most prestigious prizes: in 2006 the PEN/Nabokov Award and in 2007 the PEN/Saul Bellow Award for achievement in American fiction. Roth is the only living American writer to have his work published in a comprehensive, definitive edition by the Library of America.

A Classic of American Humor

Philip Roth fans tend to divide into two categories. One group admires his more Henry James-like efforts: the Zuckerman books, "Deception," "Patrimony." And then there are those of us who like those books but also cherish every foul, hilarious, in-you-face word he's ever written, like in "Portnoy's Complaint," "My Life as a Man" and this wonderful mock history of baseball. (Although I can't say this enough: you don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy it.) This book, which is carefully ignored by the palefaces among Roth admirers, is his comic masterpiece. It is an encyclopedic satire of mid-20th century American life, with many pages that will have you falling out of your chair with laughter. It's a cult book, like "A Confederacy of Dunces" or Dan Jenkins' "Semi-Tough"; once you read it you will buy copies for your best friends.

3 out of 5, Still a Damn Fine Batting Average

Philip Roth's THE GREAT AMERICAN NOVEL is a big, bulbous, brocaded, bullshooting joke whether viewed from the box seats behind home plate or way in the back row of the right field bleachers-but let me not get pulled into the alliterative traps in which Roth indulges himself by way of his narrator, one Word Smith. Through the pen of the almost ninety-year-old "Smitty," we read the sad and disturbing tale of how the Ruppert Mundys of the mythical and defunct Patriot League were forced to spend all of 1943 playing away games after their owners sold their home stadium to the War Department as an embarkation point for our brave soldiers. Is Smitty as insane as many others obviously find him? Did the Mundys really have a one-legged catcher, a one-armed center fielder, a 14-year-old second baseman and a dwarf as a relief pitcher? Just who really is the Babylonian former ace pitcher Gil Gamesh? Was there really a Communist plot to destroy America by first destroying baseball?
It is curiosity and determination to finish this too-long-by-a-third book that may keep you reading through to the end, I'm afraid I had to force myself through it. We certainly aren't supposed to like any of the characters, so that means the story better hold us. And while it's a great story with a good number of laughs, there are too many long-winded passages that just aren't as funny once you get the rhythm down-the satire is dulled by them, in fact. I submit that Roth knew this and simply didn't care: by 1973 when this book was published he had been a bestseller for over twenty years. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he had a Dickensian paid-by-the-word contract for this book. Additionally, there are the letters to Smitty in the Epilogue from publishers rejecting his manuscript of the Patriot League story, one of which says, "by and large the book seemed . . . to strain for its effects and to simplify for the sake of facile satiric comment the complex realities of American political and cultural life." Now while the complex realities of American political and cultural life can never be underestimated, Roth clearly knew the monster he created. And what fun for him to slap the Great American Novel title on it all!
I really enjoyed the first couple of hundred pages of this book, and I recommend it to those who are also students of baseball history (Roth weaves many real names and situations and speeches of old into his text) and aficionados of Roth. This is only my third Roth book, his earlier works PORTNOY'S COMPLAINT is one of my favorites of all time and GOODBYE, COLUMBUS is an entertaining first novel. I'm sorry I couldn't stay as excited about this one as it lumbered on, even if that was the point. Terrific concept, though.

The Perfect, Perfect Game, Smitty?

Smitty can talk. He's Master of Words, Master of Baseball History and Master of knowledge of the Patriot League. Ever heard of the Patriot League? I didn't think so. The Great American Novel will provide you with the history lesson your grandfather never told you about.

Previous reviews I read compared the book to Confederacy of Dunces. Both are excellent reads. Yes, it's nutty like Dunces, but if you are not a true lover of baseball, you may not like this book. It's all baseball (statistics, long explanations about players and their positions, and history).

Every baseball season I read a "baseball book" and this was my choice for 2006, although I bought the book more than 6 years ago (it sat on my shelf waiting for its day).

Some may find the book verbose and slow moving at times, but the overall style is quite unique and the story is hilarious. I laughed out-loud at least a dozen times.

I highly recommend this to baseball fans who aren't looking for Grisham-level writing. Roth shines with the TGAN. Don't wait 6 years like I did. Buy it now and read it.

About the Author
Talcott Parsons (1902-1979) was one of most influential and controversial theorists of twentieth-century sociology. He served on the faculty of Harvard University for forty-five years. He developed the concept of action theory, which was based on voluntarism and analytical realism. He is also responsible for introducing Max Weber's work to America. Some of his many works include The Structure of Social Action, The System of Modern Societies, and Politics and Social Structure.

About the Author
Professor Scott J. Callan is a professor of economics at Bentley College. Professor Callan received his Ph.D. degree from Texas A&M University in 1985. Prior to joining the Bentley College faculty in 1987, Professor Callan was a member of the business faculty at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York. His teaching areas of interest focus on quantitative methods and applied microeconomic topics, such as environmental economics and managerial economics. He has taught courses in environmental economics and the economics of natural resources at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In addition to his textbook, Professor Callan is the author of numerous applied microeconomic articles that have been published in a variety of economic journals, including the Southern Economic Journal, Advances in the Economics of Energy and Resources, The Review of Industrial Organization and The Journal of Business and Economic Statistics. His recent environmental economics research investigates the demand and supply characteristics associated with the market for municipal solid waste (MSW). His research findings have appeared in Land Economics and Environmental and Resource Economics, among other academic journals. In addition to his many publications, Professor Callan has reviewed numerous scholarly articles for academic publications as well as research grant proposals for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Professor Callan is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Economic Association, the Southern Economic Association, and the National Association of Business Economics.

Dr. Janet M. Thomas earned her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in economics at Boston College. After completing her doctorate, she was appointed to the faculty of Bentley University in 1987. She is currently a full professor at Bentley, teaching at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and within Bentley's Honors Program. In addition to environmental economics, Dr. Thomas teaches intermediate microeconomics, industrial organization, principles of microeconomics, and principles of macroeconomics. She has been actively involved in course and curriculum development in environmental economics and has served as coordinator of the MBA Environmental Management Concentration Program at Bentley. Dr. Thomas is an active researcher in environmental economics, corporate social responsibility, sports economics, and other fields in applied microeconomics. Her present research focuses on corporate social performance, corporate financial performance, and executive compensation. In addition to this text, she has published research results in academic journals such as LAND ECONOMICS, CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY AND ENVIRONMENT MANAGEMENT, SOUTHERN ECONOMIC JOURNAL, ENVIRONMENTAL AND RESOURCE ECONOMICS, JOURNAL OF SPORTS ECONOMICS, REVIEW OF INDUSTRIAL ORGANIZATION, and EASTERN ECONOMIC JOURNAL. She is a member of the American Economic Association and has served as a reviewer for a number of academic journals and textbook publishers. Dr. Thomas was named Faculty Member of the Year by Bentley's Student Government Organization in 1991. In 1993, she received the Gregory H. Adamian Award for Teaching Excellence. In 1996, she was honored with the Bentley College Scholar of the Year Award, and in 2005 she received the Outstanding Scholarly Contribution Award.

Market Researchers: It pays to get back to your roots. This is a foundation text worth revisiting.

Robert K Merton is a name largely forgotten in marketing research circles, yet he is widely credited as being the inventor of the focus group as a concept. It began when he was roped in by his colleague (another research giant)Paul Lazarsfeld to assist with a project looking at how groups of US soliders were reacting to Uncle Sam propaganda films.

Merton observed some interviews and was appalled, basically, by the lack of technique. The questions were leading, the interviewer bias was showing (So how totally evil do you think these Nazi's are?) and... well, Merton took up Lazarsfeld's offer to lead the project. This was in the 1940s, and Lazarfeld's "Columbia school" was the dominant force in pioneering the art and science of Market Research. Many of the techniques we use today (often without question)came from these people.

Merton went on to carve out his name as a great and influential sociologist, but not before he wrote this handy volume in 1951, a complete guide to the techniques of conducting a focused interview - that is, an interview that has an agenda to find evidence that helps prove or disprove a particular thesis.

The original text became a bible for interviewers, and for good reason. While you'll find Merton's style a little dry, the book is fastidious in going through all aspects of the interview and discussing the philosophy behind what we're doing.

Researchers, like golfers, need to be quite self-conscious, I feel, to go back and hone our skills and re-think our techniques and emerge (like Tiger Woods, I dare say, after redefining his swing) better and stronger as professionals. This book helps us literally to go back and revisit where our techniques and methods come from.

It includes a forward in which Merton reasserts his role as a pioneer (I think it reads too self-justifyingly, and way too stuffily) but he has a fair point. When a great idea gets incorporated into society, or - as we see in this case - into a profession, then something is usually lost: the initial rationale perhaps.

Berkeley law professor Skolnick and Temple University criminal justice professor and former New York City police officer Fyfe examine the problem of police violence on the street, in crowd control, and in interrogations. Although they believe that police use of excessive force has decreased somewhat in the last 20 years, it is still widespread and is aggravated by the use of the military model, police culture, and methods of police administration. They argue that police agencies need major reforms including greater accountability, openness, and professionalism and would benefit from a new vision of policing. They are troubled by some police definitions of success (based on numbers of arrests versus preventing and solving peacekeeping problems); the view of police work as war rather than enlisting constructive community support; and the mindset of the "divided nation"--police allied with the white middle class against poor inner-city nonwhites. The authors include a detailed discussion of the Los Angeles police (including the Rodney King case) and other urban police departments as well as interesting comparisons with British policing. Students of criminal justice, public policy, and law, as well as police professionals and the educated public, won't want to miss this interesting, constructive, and timely book.

Using as a starting point the acquittal of the cops accused of beating Rodney King, Skolnick (Law/Berkeley; House of Cards, 1978) and Fyfe (Criminal Justice/Temple Univ.) explore the reasons for, and suggest some solutions to, police brutality in America. Digging into police culture, the history of police departments, and the polarization of American society into criminal and noncriminal classes, the authors find several explanations for police brutality. Among them are: the narrow outlook of police executives; the insularity of police departments; the emphasis in police culture on military metaphors; and the handing down of the value of violence by higher-ranking cops to street officers. Few would quarrel with Skolnick and Fyfe when they contend that police ``are obliged to acknowledge the law's moral force and to be constrained by it,'' and few will be unconvinced by the authors' demonstration of how vulnerable Americans of all races and classes are to abuses of police power. Encouragingly, though, they conclude that brutality has diminished over the last 20 years as a result of greater minority representation on police forces nationwide. Skolnick and Fyfe make suggestions for reform (like ``community- oriented policing,'' a concept that already seems to have been implemented in many forces) that generally are intended to enhance community participation in policing. They also suggest videotaping police conduct as ``a technical tool deriving from a larger principle of police reform, which is that anything we can do to reduce the insularity of police is a good thing.'' highly informative, but leaving a few gaps

This book is jam-packed with facts.

I have just two major criticisms:

--The explanations on binary forms is unnecessarily difficult to understand.

Just in case you're wondering, a binary form is closed, or sectional, if the first half ends on the tonic.
It is open, or continuous, if the first half ends on the dominant or any other chord.
It is rounded if the second part ends with a restatement of the first part.
It is simple if the second part does not end with such a restatement.
That is all in the wide world there is to it!

--The book gives detailed analyses of compositions after offering few or no musical examples. (I should have read Annie Burridge's review and purchased the Burkhart Anthology.)

I also see a few high points which are missed:

--There is no discussion of development themes. An outstanding example is Mendelssohn's Italian Symphony.
--There is no discussion of development canons. An outstanding example is Franck's Symphony in d minor.
--In the discussion on chorale preludes, he doesn't give the familiar example of "Wachet Auf."
--In the discussion on vocal chorales, he doesn't give the familiar example of "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring."
--In the discussion on baroque partitas, I would like to see the characteristic rhythms of each of the dance movements. The author probably considers this outside the scope of the book.
--He tells us that the recapitulation does not always treat all the themes in the exposition, but he gives us few examples. I have wondered why we never hear the lyrical theme in the recapitulation of the Dvorak cello concerto. This is such a well-known composition that I think it should be used as an example.
--I'm curious about how the Liszt piano concertos are constructed.
--I'm also curious about how the megalomanic symphonies by Mahler and Bruckner are constructed. It seems that the author was partial toward music of the baroque and classical eras, but nineteenth-century music is popular, like it or not.
--I would like more discussion about keyboard preludes. I have never been able to compose a good keyboard prelude.
--There is no discussion of standard liturgical texts for church vocal music. The author probably considered this outside the scope of the book, also.

A fine text to help students develop skills in analysis of tonal music

This is not a book on form in the old sense of the term. That is, it is not a collection of terms for students to use as decals to stick on pieces as they learn them. Green aims to provide the student with skills that aid him or her to understand what the piece is about. What is that the piece says about itself? This is important because every piece, especially the masterworks, takes its own approach to form and for every rule provided, you can find many exceptions. The problem with the label approach is that music, thankfully, is not so standardized that you can say for a certainty how a given piece of a certain type is going to behave.

Yes, Green does use the standard terms, but only as a means of generalization. He is very good at pointing out the range of behaviors one might expect within a given form. He also provides historical notes that discuss how certain composers or historical periods used certain materials in their compositions.

Again, the goal here is to help students to develop a set of tools and intuitions so he or she can look at any (tonal) piece of music and be able to analyze what is going on within the piece. The labels only help the student if they allow the student to look more deeply and directly at the music. However, if the analysis stops with the application of a label the student will actually have been harmed. Remember, most labels are developed after a sufficient body of music has been written to codify a form. So, the living composers often wrote the music without the benefit of the terms we often use to describe their work.

While the book has many fine musical examples and recommended exercises, the teacher may wish to supplement them with examples of her own in order to provide supplementary examples of the principles discussed in the text. I believe the student gets a better idea of how music works through multiple and varied examples from the literature. The more well-chosen examples the student hears the better.

What you must know before you buy this!

If you are using this book in a class then your teacher will guide you through it, BUT--if you are using this book to review music theory you must know a few things. 1) ALL the exercises in this book come out of the Burkhart Anthology, so you must purchase that as well. 2)There are no answers supplied for ANYof the exercises. 3) This book covers the analytical form of music (types of phrases, binary and ternary forms), it is assumed you are skilled in complex chord and harmonic analysis already. Overall, the book is fairly clear and well-organized and uses plenty of musical examples.

About the Author
Christopher "Kit" Salter did his undergraduate work at Oberlin College, with a major in Geography and Geology. He spent three years teaching English at a Chinese university in Taiwan immediately following Oberlin. Graduate work for both the M.A. and the Ph.D. was done at the University of California, Berkeley. He taught at UCLA from 1968 to 1987, when he took on fulltime employment with the National Geographic Society in Washington with his wife, Cathy. They were both involved in the Society's campaign to bring geography back into the American school system. Kit has been professor and chair of the Department of Geography at the University of Missouri, Columbia since moving to the heartland in 1988. Themes that have made Salter glad he choose geography as a life field include landscape study and interpretation in both domestic and foreign settings; landscape study and literature to show students that geography occurs in all writing, not just in textbooks; and geography education to help learners at all levels see the critical nature of geographic issues. He has written more than 125 articles in various aspects of geography; has traveled to a lot of the places that he writes about in his text; and has been wise enough to have a son who is an architect in Los Angeles; a daughter who is a teacher in San Francisco Bay Area; and a neat wife who is a writer in the heart of the heartland in Breakfast Creek, Missouri.

Joseph J. Hobbs received his B.A. at the University of California Santa Cruz in 1978 and his M.A and Ph.D. at the University of Texas-Austin in 1980 and 1986. He is a professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia, and a geographer of the Middle East with many years of field research on biogeography and Bedouin peoples in the deserts of Egypt. Hobbs's interests in the region grew from a boyhood lived in Saudi Arabia and India. His research in Egypt has been supported by Fulbright fellowships, the American Council of Learned Societies, the American Research Center in Egypt, and the National Geographic Society Committee for Research and Exploration. He served as the team leader of the Bedouin Support Program, a component of the St. Katherine National Park project in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula. His current research interests are indigenous peoples participation in protected areas in the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and Central America; human uses of caves worldwide; and the global narcotics trade. He is the author of BEDOUIN LIFE IN THE EGYPTIAN WILDERNESS and MOUNT SINAI (both University of Texas Press), co-author of THE BIRDS OF EGYPT (Oxford University Press), and co-editor of DANGEROUS HARVEST: DRUG PLANTS AND THE TRANSFORMATION OF INDIGENOUS LANDSCAPES (Oxford). He teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in world regional geography, environmental geography, the geography of the Middle East, the geography of caves, the geography of global current events, the geographies of drugs and terrorism, and a field course on the ancient Maya geography of Belize. He has received the University of Missouri's highest teaching award, the Kemper Fellowship. In summers from 1984 to 1999, he led "adventure travel" tours to remote areas in Latin America, Africa, the Indian Ocean, Asia, Europe, and the High Arctic. Hobbs lives in Missouri with his wife Cindy, daughters Katherine and Lily, and an animal menagerie.
