This is the second in a series of books on modern China published by The Free Press, a division of McaMillan Publishing Co. Although published in the mid 1970's the series still has value for college undergraduate and graduate level instruction.
The writing style of the entire series easy to read and yet conveys much correct scholarly history. Professor Sheridan is the author of a number of books on China and he seems to favor writing on the warlord era of China--1912 thru 1949--having written this book and a biography of the famous "Christian Warlord," Feng Yu-hsiang.
This particular book, "China in Disintegration" deals with the period of time from the 1911 Sun Yat-sen democratic bourgeois revolution up to the time of the 1949 Revolution in China. During this time much of the centralized character of Chinese society and governance was broken apart. Various regional warlords controlled local areas of China and ran them independently from the wishes of the central government under Kuomintang Party of Sun Yat-sen and later of Chiang Kai-shek. Thus the title of this short 294-page book.

a view of china from the west, in 1975, with no glasses

Sheridan published his book in 1975, in the middle of the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), a period of turmoil, mass killing, disintegration, unjustice, economic failure and human tragedy in general as disastrous as no other in the Chinese history, maybe with the sole exception of the Great Leap Forward (1957-60), another Mao Zedong's orchestrated descent into hell, this time featuring mass starvation (30 million deaths?) and stupidity as signs of the era. Apart from this, the whole Mao tenure was marked by the Gulag. Sheridan was, one have to suppose, a scholar on the subject of China in general, even if his book is devoted to the so-called Republican Era (1912-1949). How could he ignore so blatantly the consequences of the movements, decisions and political clashes he was reviewing? Because he was obsessed with words. Sheridan loves one word above any other: integration. His book is all about integration, his central theme: integration is supposedly that thing that turns feudal or semi-feudal or backward countries into modern players in the world stage, like Mao's China, as he naively suggests in his introduction. The book itself is named China in disintegration, and his message goes like this: the Kuomintang didn't integrate, so it lost. The Communists did integrate, so they won. Quite simple. There's other words Sheridan loves too, like modernization: like so many other 60s and 70s scholars, he hails Mao as the founder of the "modern" China, whatever it means, like that's good (or bad), like it wasn't Chiang Kai-shek who won the beloved seat and veto in the Security Council for the Republic of China. Maybe, he had to say all this empty words to make a point in the furiously anti-communist environment of Vietnam War U.S. I don't care. That's over now, the people who were supposed to listen to him are doing something else now, and his empty words remain empty. In A People's Tragedy, the Brit Orlando Figes portrays the Russian Revolution and the Civil War as a bloody business from both sides points of view. In his study of the other Great Agrarian Uprising, he shows clearly how the communist won not because they were nice guys who wanted to help the peasants and won their simple hearts, as Sheridan tries to demonstrate in the Chinese case, but because their policies looked better in the long run for the majority of a largely apolitical mass of people who wanted Land. Only Land (even if they were finally cheated, and ended up with No Land At All). Mao Zedong knew perfectly the basics of the Kidnapping of the Agrarian Revolution, that old communist strategy, as expressed in the notes written by the CIA case officers in Arbenz Guatemala (1954) or later by J.P.Vann in South Vietnam. Sheridan ignores it all. His revolution is a Bad Guy-Good Guy struggle, a young, brilliant, idealist Communist with History blowing his sails, versus that old creep who would kill his mother for money, the Kuomintang Confucionist Chinese. That's the weakest point of the book and one real important, because the Communist-Nationalist struggle is the key of the Republican Era, the one thing that basically weakened the Kuomintang's capacity to "integrate" China and finally gave birth to another China, 39 years of bloody soul-searching that ended up with a sell-out in exchange for Coca-cola. Sheridan, apparently unable to read either Chinese or French (the language in which so many excellent books about China are written), as I suppose after checking his sources, didn't have access to many authors that traveled behind the communist lines during the 30s and the 40s and wrote what they saw before 1975. In fact, when he's got to speak about Mao's revolutionary base in Yenan, he doesn't provide a single footnote identifying the sources of his lack of any knowledge whatsoever about the place, though he later states how helpful was for him Red Star over China, that piece of propaganda rubbish courtesy of Mao's friend and frequent guest Edgar Snow. The rest of the book, when one doesn't have to cope with the idealization of Mao and the reds, is well written, even occasionally insightful about the many flaws of the Kuomintang regime and the Warlords wars. Too bad all the names are in the Wade-Gilles transcription, which is currently used in Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau, and is (I believe) inferior to the pinyin transcription used in communist China, and confusing, especially since there is no Chinese characters or pinyin translations anywhere in the book. There you have one of the very few communist successes in history, and Sheridan doesn't take advantage of it.

Landmark Work

Arguably the most significant text on directing for the stage, originally published after Alexander Dean's death (1893-1939) in 1941 from his posthumous class notes and revised several times. Alexander Dean was a professor at Yale in the 1930s. Lawrence Carra, now in his 90s, was his student and then went on to head the Drama Department at Carnegie Mellon University, the oldest degree-conferring school of theatre in the United States.
This book has influenced generations of stage directors and is considered by many the most influential book of its kind. It is both theoretical and practical. Although the prose style is somewhat dry, the content and information is invaluable. The book presents five basic "fundamentals" of directing: composition, picturization, movement, rhythm and pantomimic dramatization. Carra's follow-up book, Controls in Stage Directing, although out of print, is a worthy companion which explains how the five fundamentals may applied to plays of various genres and styles.
The book presents a true method of how to approach the staging of plays. It is not just an outline of basic principles but also gives insight into the art of directing. The basic principles provide working techniques for the realization of the values of a play onstage. The book begins with an excellent essay on "Drama as Art," continues with a chapter on basic technique for the actor and then the heart and soul of the book are the five major chapters covering the basic fundamentals of directing. It ends with a chapter on Production Procedures.
An excellent and important book. I am biased, however, as I was a student of Professor Carra.

What All Beginning Directors Cannot Be Without

Dean and Carra's FUNDAMENTALS OF PLAY DIRECTING is a step-by-step manual which deciphers the major technical and visual issues of stage directing. It includes specific "tricks of the trade" which remind all directors, beginning or advanced, of the mechanics of stage work. While the authors discuss dramatic theory, the book corrects examines technique, addressing the key concepts of stage focus, framing, stage pictures, and the creation of dynamism on the stage. It allows current students of directing to understand the "fundamentals" first in order to create new and exciting works later. Though expensive, it is the definitive text for directing students. FUNDAMENTALS OF PLAY DIRECTING is an important investment in a young director's theatrical future.

A great book, well deserving of its status as a classic

This is a great and enduring work on the art of directing. Don't let its age fool you. The fundamentals discussed here are crucial and all too often neglected. If you want to learn how to direct for the stage, or appreciate what a director does (or what bad directors fail to do), this book is simply invaluable.

Prefatorily, Roberts and Olson grind the ax that Wayne has been marginalized by pop-culture elitists because of his political conservatism, which, as they point out, was always "outspoken but nonideological." Yet they provide a balanced, thoroughly researched portrait that traces his career from a lengthy apprenticeship in countless western potboilers through the wartime films that established his character as an American ideal to the later ones that played upon his real-life status as a proud but anachronistic icon. They're particularly insightful about the development of Wayne's distinctive acting style--the halting cadence of his speech, his distinctive walk, and other studied mannerisms. John Waye: American is a great biography of an iconic American actor

John Wayne (1907-1979) was a man of more complexity than many folks would suppose. Consider:

1. He portrayed macho cowboys and military leaders in the movies but never served in World War II (which caused him a good deal of guilt in later years.)

2. He was an advocate for strong family life (including strong

male bonding with his friends) but was wed three times and

had several affairs.

3. He enjoyed drink, good food and profane activities with his buddies Ward Bond and director John Ford but was noted for his

strong he-man appearance (he was 6'4' tall and at one time weighed over 260 pounds.)

4. He was at one time a member of the John Birch Society and

supported the right wing during the McCarthy era but could also

express individuality in politics (he supported LBJ and was a

friend of Jimmy Carter). He resigned from the Birchers and was

a man who valued America freedom. He was constantly having money troubles with the IRS and disdained (loathed!) big government.

5. He believed in God but did not become a member of an organized religion until converting to Roman Catholicism on his deathbed),

6. He was a good but often absent father to his seven children.

7. He was well read and memorized his lines quickly.

8. He was an excellent actor who finally won his Best Actor Oscar for "True Grit."

Randy Roberts and James Olson have told "Duke's story from

his life in middle class Iowa and Glendale (his parents despised one another and later divorced)to football player at USC to work

in the movies.

Wayne's first film was a flop and for almost ten years he labored in the B Western factory in such minor studios as Republic and Monogram. Only with 1939's turn as the Ringo Kid

in John Ford's classic film did the Wayne star begin to rise.

Wayne will live forever in such classics as "Red River" directed by Howard Hawks in 1948; "The Quiet Man with his best

screen lady Maureen O'Hara" the immortal Cavalry trilogy of John

Roberts and Olson's book is long; well documented; well written and their hard work has paid off. I found a tear in my eye as I read of Duke's last few months battling cancer which he called "The Red Witch."

Wayne had many faults as a man. He was a chauvinist; did not

understand women and could be rough and rowdy. His positive

traits were many: a generous and loving heart; kindness to others

a respect for his fans and a love for his country the United

States of American. Take him all in all whether you be a liberal or conservative or indifferent to politics we will never see another John Wayne!

I loved this book and recommend it highly. If you do not understand John Wayne you will not understand the America he

loved so deeply, so long and with so much honor through a lengthy and lustrous career in the movies!

The only issue was the inside cover of the book was a greeting / message to the receiver of the book from his mom ? and magic markered on it . Otherwise the book was fine to read and the jacket was ok too. Old book for sure.

John Wayne: American Reviewed

Roberts and Olson obviously did a serious amount of research to produce this tome of 648 pages.However, it could have been done in much less. The early chapters of the book are excellent and true to being a biography of Marion/John. The biographical data continues its interesting search of Marion/John up through his years at USC. At this point Marion has become Duke and shortly thereafter becomes John Wayne. As soon as Wayne enters his life in Hollywood, Roberts and Olson forget what a biography is. The facts and comments become filmic and any resemblance to a biography becomes a filmography. If the reader has never seen a John Wayne movie, this part of the book is for you as the plot layouts of all his films are described in detail page after page. Not only does Roberts and Olson review Wayne films but those of many others, digressing to the point at times, that the name John, Duke or Wayne has been absent for many paragraphs. This would not be so bad if it was tied as relevant to the life of John Wayne. So, as a biography of John Wayne (the person): very disappointing. As a review of John Wayne films it does an excellent job. Of 648 pages maybe 200 are biographical. The book comes back on course as a biography in the last chapters. The research again shows critical work and at times may even be too "on target" for some readers. The facts concerning Wayne and how he handled sickness and death are very moving and explicitly written. I would have liked this same type of insight on John Wayne from 1939 to 1973, where the book unfortunately, with some exceptions, is a film review and not a biography. As a biography of one of the greatest Americans ever: disappointing!

About the Author
Maurice Meisner is the Harvey Goldberg Professor of History at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Visiting Centennial Professor at the London School of Economics. His writings, which have been translated into Chinese, Korean, Japanese, French, German, Spanish, and Portuguese, include Li Ta-chao and the Origins of Chinese Marxism; Marxism, Maoism and Utopianism; and many other works on modern Chinese history.

An incredible exploration of the PRCs many vicissitudes.

As a whole, this an excellent text. Meisner exhibits an incredible knowledge and understanding of the tragic history of the PRC. As he takes the reader on an incredible exploration of the PRC's many vicissitudes,Meisner, despite being a historian by trade, consistenly gives the reader masterful economic and political analysis of the events that swept the "Middle Kingdom" during this last half-century. In addition to this, he dissects with precision the manifold conceptual arguments, theoretical polemics, and numerous speeches Mao offered to the people as to how and why these incredible changes could and should occur. Upon completion of it, I am definitely better versed on the myriad events that have shaped today's PRC. From China's revolutionary heritage all the way up to the rise of Deng, Meisner is consistently clear and captivating. His masterful use of economic, political, sociological, and historical analysis is impressive. He also demonstrates quite a knowledge of Marxist-Leninism and Maoism. However, at times I felt bogged down by it all, and honestly had to wonder how germane it truly is to the events that transpired. Yet, as a whole, I still have to conclude that this book is excellent and should be considered on of the key books for someone investigating contemporary China.

A left-wing popular history of modern China

Maurice Meisner, one of the US' foremost Sinologists, did an excellent job writing a popular history of the People's Republic in "Mao's China and After". Starting with the fall of the Empire and the May Fourth movement as well as New Culture, Meisner then skips to the point where the Chinese Communists have won the Civil War. He discusses the Maoist, Liuist, Dengist etc. periods in Chinese history in depth, taking a very large-scale view concentrating in particular on economic and social history, with some commentary on the position of intellectuals thrown in (in particular with the Hundred Flowers movement and the Cultural Revolution).

Meisner gives a solid left-wing perspective on all the relevant issues, focusing in particular on the successes and failures both of Mao's view of socialism, which, as Meisner points out, was itself on the left wing of the Communist Party of China. As some reviewers have noted, at times this does a disservice to his eagle's view of things, as a lot of social history in which Mao plays only a tangential role is ignored: there is no part on the position of women and changes in this, no description of the Civil War itself at all, practically nothing on the war against Japan, and even the Great Leap Forward gets only a summary description. On the other hand, this allows him to focus very strongly on the relation between economic policy and economic structures on the one hand, and the roles and views of the leaders of the Party on the other hand, surely an essential but often missing element of any serious political history.

The book is eminently readable and requires absolutely zero prior knowledge of modern China, and at the same time, after finishing it, a reader will have at least a moderate level of knowledge on modern Chinese political history. This is quite an accomplishment, made possible by Meisner's talent to make complicated political entanglements seem straightforward and obvious, and his constant eye on the economic side of things. There are a lot of things that one could criticize this book on, but since it is meant as a popular introduction, it should be judged on those criteria, and there it succeeds quite well.

About the Author
Donald L. Pavia earned his BS degree in chemistry from Reed College and his PhD in organic chemistry from Yale University. In 1970, he joined the faculty at Western Washington University as Assistant Professor and now holds the rank of Professor. He is the coauthor of two organic laboratory books that include techniques and experiments: INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A MICROSCALE APPROACH, 4e (Brooks/Cole), and INTRODUCTION TO LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A SMALL-SCALE APPROACH, 2e (Brooks/Cole), as well as MICROSCALE AND MACROSCALE TECHNIQUES IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY (Brooks/Cole), which highlights techniques to be used with a faculty member's own experiments. Professor Pavia's research interests center on the synthesis and reactions of valence tautomeric and photochromic compounds, especially pyrylium-3-oxide tautomers. Autoxidations are a special interest. His other interests include the use of computers in teaching organic chemistry, both for lecture presentation and for the simulation of laboratories. He is the author of several computer programs. One such program is SQUALOR (Simulated Qualitative Organic Analysis) for which he won the 1986 EDUCOM/NCRIPTAL award. The program is designed for teaching the methods for solving organic unknowns. Professor Pavia's personal interests include classical music, opera, woodworking, metalworking, and antique trains. He and his wife, Neva-Jean, have three children.

Best organic laboratory manual available!

I have taken a full course using this book and I think that it is the best one I have seen! Organic chemistry is a hard subject and this book lays it out in an understandable way. The "techniuques" section is current, readable, and the pictures are well done. The essays that accompany many of the experiments are entertaining and give good background information that helps doing the experiments more enjoyable. Probably the best section is the "identification of unknowns" section which lays out in a good logical way how to identify what you have in the lab. I think that the book also addresses and promotes a great trend in chemistry i.e. microscale research that reduces waste and promotes conservation of chemicals and the environment.

Excellent Lab Text But Not Everyone Has To Buy It

Though a complete laboratory text with 50+ experiments, lab techniques, tables of unknowns and spectroscopy, the organic faculty prepare our own lab manual to be followed. Pavia text becomes a close handy reference for lab techniques and setup. The techniques section, which include filtration, crystallization, distillation (simple, fractional, and steam), chromatogrpahy (column, thin-layer, and gas)... should be carefully studied before conducting experiments for beginning students. Unless your organic lab course follows almost exactly the outline of experiments in this text, you can check it out from the library and read it.

Hope not optimism

Dr Snyder differentiates will power and way power in hope. That makes sense. He shows the correlations of hope with many positive factors. I agree with him that hope is more than optimism, which sounds like blaming others. Hope looks forward. Teaching hope is difficult. I like some ideas dr. Snyder presents, but some are bit too easy. A well-eritten book on difficult topic.

About the Author
Dominique G. Homberger is a Professor at Louisiana State University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, where she has been teaching for more than 20 years after earning a doctorate from the University of Zûrich, Switzerland and a post-doctoral fellowship at Columbia University. Well known for her studies on functional, ecological and evolutionary morphology of birds, Dr. Homberger has published two research monographs, numerous articles and book chapters, and four laboratory manuals. She has organized and edited several symposia on various subjects. She is an editor of Zoomorphology and Zoologischer Anzeiger, and a member of the editorial board of Journal of Biosciences. In recognition of her contributions, she has been elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Ornithologists¿ Union, and the Association for Women in Science.

Warren F. Walker, Jr., is Emeritus Professor at Oberlin College, where he taught for 38 years after taking a Harvard doctorate. Well known for his articles on reptile anatomy and locomotion, Dr. Walker is the author of seven laboratory manuals and textbooks published in over 30 editions and in several translations. In addition to being the coauthor of Vertebrate Dissection, Dr. Walker is also coauthor of the Brooks/Cole title FUNCTIONAL ANATOMY OF THE VERTEBRATES, Third Edition by Liem/Bemis/Walker/Grande.

Good but some of pictures are tough to discern

Having taught Comparative Anatomy Lab with this book I would not recommend it to someone who is going through dissection for the first time and alone. A good sense of terms (ie. medial, caudal etc)and such is a must. Even having gone through dissections of hundreds of cats some things are still difficult to find. However I like how it ties things together and shows step wise evolution of vertebrates from lampreys to cats.
