I actually ended up not needing this book the particular semester I purchased this, not uncommon thanks to the budget cuts, but because of the great deal I got on it I don't mind storing it in the closet until I get around to taking the course.

About the Author
Dr. Solomon has written several leading college-level textbooks in biology and in human anatomy and physiology. Her books have been translated into more than 10 languages. Dr. Solomon earned an M.S. from the University of Florida and an M.A. and Ph.D. from the University of South Florida. Dr. Solomon taught biology and nursing students for more than 20 years. In addition to being a biologist and science author, Dr. Solomon is a bio-psychologist with a special interest in the neuro-physiology of traumatic experience. Her research has focused on the neurological, endocrine, and psychological effects of trauma, including Post-traumatic Stress Disorder and development of maladaptive coping strategies. Dr. Solomon has presented her research at many national and international conferences, and her work has been published in leading professional journals. Dr. Solomon has been profiled more than 30 times in leading publications, including Who's Who in America, Who's Who in Science and Engineering, Who's Who in Medicine and Healthcare, Who's Who in American Education, Who's Who of American Women, and Who's Who in the World.

Dr. Berg is an award-winning teacher and author who taught for 17 years at the University of Maryland in College Park. It was at this institution that she received numerous teaching and service awards. Dr. Berg is also the recipient of many national and regional awards including the National Science Teachers Association Award for Innovations in College Science Teaching, the Nation's Capital Area Disabled Student Services Award, and the Washington Academy of Sciences Award in University Science Teaching.

Dr. Martin is Professor Emeritus and former Director of General Biology, Division of Life Sciences, Rutgers University. Dr. Martin received an M.S. at Florida State University, where she studied the chromosomes of related plant species to understand their evolutionary relationships. She earned a Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin, where she studied the genetics of the fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster, and then conducted postdoctoral research at Princeton University. Dr. Martin has taught General Biology and other courses at Rutgers for over 30 years and has been involved in writing textbooks since 1988. She is immensely grateful that her decision to study biology in college has led to a career that allows her many ways to share her excitement about all aspects of biology.

A great text, but I definetly wouldn't read it for fun.

This text has a lot of diagrams, pictures and graphs that help the reader understand the material more fully. Also well written and easy to read. The diagrams for respiration were especially helpful.

One of the worst written books ive ever read

I used this textbook in a class taught by one of the authors. The arrangments is designed to make it easy to skim, that is the first few pages of each section summarize the sectioin, with each new section going into more and more detail. However this makes the book very hard to read in a good flow. Depending on the level of your class, yo uwill almost invariably need to know more detail than in the first few pages. Also, the text and metaphors used are terribly written and often times sentences jsut flow badly and lead to ambiguous sentences. However, the book covers a very broad range of topics in pretty good detail. so i am giving it a modst 3/5 stars. By the way, I got a 3.5/4 in this class so i am not just complaining out of sour grapes.

About the Author
Thomas W. Hungerford received his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Chicago. He has taught at the University of Washington and at Cleveland State University, and is now at St. Louis University. Near the end of Morrow's painful novel of nuclear holocaust six survivors representing mankind are tried for their complicity in the war. Denouncing them, an alien prosecutor says, "It did not have to be this way. Three virtues only were needed . . . . the greatest of these is moral outrage." That seems to be the key to a curiously contrived saga of nuclear nightmare. As scenes of family life are followed by explicit scenes of nuclear attack, as obscene theories of nuclear tactics are explained, the only possible reaction is moral outrage. Unfortunately, an overabundance of fantastic elementsthe prophecies of Nostradamus, giant prehistoric birds, a flying tailor shop, a mysterious alien race called the unadmittedis never quite joined into a coherent whole. Even Bad Morrow Is Great Literature

"This is the Way the World Ends" is one of James Morrow's early works, and when comparing it (somewhat unfairly) with more recent novels, like the Towing Jehovah trilogy, it's easy to see his progression as a writer, both in terms of ideas and style. While remaining firmly in the `snooty intellectual' camp Morrow himself satirizes in his later books, "TITWTWE" is still a good read, and is a unique addition to the field of post-apocalyptic fiction.
Sandwiched between bookends of Nostradamus, the plot revolves around main character George Paxton, an everyman who carves tombstones for a living and worries about his family. When his neighbor invents something called a "scopas suit" that promises to be the device to change the nuclear balance of power, by allowing its wearer to survive and thrive after a nuclear exchange, George finds he cannot afford one - but makes a deal with a strange shopkeeper to get one on the cheap. On his way home, World War III erupts and George is caught almost at Ground Zero as he watches his family die from intense radiation poisoning.
That is just the setup for the meat of the book. George is rescued by a submarine and taken to Antarctica with five other survivors, to be put on trial for ending the human race. The judge, jury, and executioners? A race called "unadmitted humans," who came to be in the time-altering effects of the War. They bleed black blood and only live for a short time, but they nurse George to health so he can stand trial. Those familiar with "Blameless in Abaddon" will recognize the trial as a means for Morrow to tell his story, and the reader is intended to sympathize with those who created the nuclear conflict through lies like "mutual assured destruction," "deterrence," and so forth.
It may be an artifact of the Reagan years, but Morrow's "TITWTWE" remains a solid piece of literature, even if it tapers off (as another review put it, the middle is a part you have to force yourself to get through). Morrow's prose flows easily, and the trial is a clear indictment of both the no-nukes crowd and those who rely on nuclear weapons instead of human intelligence to solve problems. As usual, Morrow neatly destroys the traditional dualism inherent in the nuclear debate, leaving the reader to formulate new conclusions after the two most popular choices have been proven wrong. It may not be his best work, but it's worth checking out, and it belongs on any post-apocalyptic aficionado's shelf.

An odd, but interesting, post-pocalyptic novel

Sandwiched between vignettes of Nostradamus, "This is the Way the World Ends" is the tale of George Paxton, and the five other remaining humans on Earth. Unfortunately for George, he and the others are being tried for war crimes stemming from the nuclear destruction of the planet by the "unadmitted"; basically unborn generations that have willed themselves into existence for a brief time in order to inquire why their potential will never be realized. Compounding George's dilemma is the fact that unlike his fellow defendants, who are all wizards of nuclear strategy, George is just a simple everyman (with the ironic profession of tomb stone carver) whose only "guilt" was in not carefully reading a sales contract for a free nuclear survival suit for his daughter.
As one can tell from this brief synopsis of the plot, this is not your ordinary work of post-apocalyptic fiction. Or rather, it covers the same ground, but from a completely different angle. The Nostradamus bookends offer an air of inevitability to the narrative, and introduce a major plot device, and Morrow's description of a nuclear war's aftermath is highly engaging. Where this novel really shines, however, is in the trial.
One might expect Morrow to be a staunch proponent of disarmament given the theme of his book, but that assumption is not entirely true. Through the mechanism of the trial, he rails against both the naiveté of the doves, and the hawks' disconnect from reality. As another reviewer so eloquently stated, he demolishes the generally accepted duality of nuclear politics, and demands the reader consider a third path of their own making. That's where George comes in; his real guilt is not in his action, but in his inaction.
While much of "This is the Way the World Ends" is written in the language of 1980's Cold War rhetoric, and the threat of a massive nuclear exchange has, if not passed, certainly lessened immensely, the novel still offers great insight. First of all, Morrow's discussion of deterrence versus disarmament is fascinating; in fact (and I say this with the benefit of a degree in the subject) they would be more than adequate points of departure for any undergraduate course in international security. Particularly fascinating are his statements within ten pages that (paraphrased) 1. You can't have deterrence without strength and 2. Strength leads to escalation leads to instability. Morrow doesn't offer any answers, but he does frame some fascinating questions. Around those questions he has built a novel of intense emotion and beautiful characters; the last time a book's ending moved me so intensely was another classic of the genre, "On the Beach". And while I wouldn't place it in quite the same league as Nevil Shute's masterwork, it is nonetheless a remarkable book that is eminently worth reading.

Not Morrow's best work

While still very good in its own right, I count This Is the Way the World Ends as one of Morrow's weaker efforts. The book details the end of humanity and the quest of the last surviving humans to both survive and make some meaning out of their existence.
In his work, Morrow handles the most serious topics (the death of God, the end of the world) with an sense of inventive whimsy that can almost always overcome the inherent absurdity of the subject matter -- but This Is the Way the World Ends is long on absurdity and short on inspiration. This Is the Way the World Ends has many absurd moments, but too few genuine moments to make it all come together the way it did with Towing Jehovah or Blameless in Abaddon.
As an author, James Morrow still stands head and shoulders above the pack in my book, and This Is the Way the World Ends is definitely a volume worth picking up -- but I would do so only after you've devoured his other works.

About the Author
Dr. Michael Scott Doyle (PhD, University of Virginia) is a Professor of Spanish, Translation Studies, and Business Spanish at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Dr. Doyle served as a Distinguished Visiting Professor of Spanish at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) during the 2013-2014 academic year. At UNC Charlotte he chaired the Department of Foreign Languages (1993-99) and served as Graduate Coordinator (1999-2003 and 2005-2009), Director of the Certificate in Business Spanish (1998-), and Director of the undergraduate and graduate Certificates in Translating and Translation Studies (2000-2012). He also chaired the Department of Spanish and Portuguese at San Diego State University (1991-93). To date, Dr. Doyle has 76 publications (64 single-authored), among them 13 books as well as book chapters, articles, essays, translations, interviews, and other contributions. Most recently, he is the author of a trilogy of articles on Business Language Studies, Business Spanish, and Language and Spanish for Specific Purposes: "Business Language Studies in the United States: On Nomenclature, Context, Theory, and Method" (focus issue of The Modern Language Journal); "Business Spanish in the United States: Evolution, Method and Markets" (Cuadernos de ALDEEU [Asociacion de Licenciados y Doctores Espanoles en los Estados Unidos; Spanish Professionals in America, Inc.]); and "Continuing Provisional Theoretical Cartography in the LSP Era" (Scholarship and Teaching on Languages for Specific Purposes [LSP]). He is certified by the American Translators Association (ATA) in both Spanish to English and English to Spanish translation.

Ronald C. Cere (Ph.D., New York University) is a Professor of Spanish in Eastern Michigan University's (EMU) Language and International Trade Program and has taught Business Spanish since 1975 at various U.S. universities and for Fortune 500 companies, notably MASCO Corp. He has published numerous books, manuals, and articles for Coleccion Iberia, McGraw-Hill, Hispania, Canadian Modern Language Journal, The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese (AATSP), and Dimensions, and has delivered over 150 presentations, seminars, and workshops nationally and internationally on commercial Spanish and other foreign language subjects, especially cross-cultural communication. Professor Cere co-chaired EMU's annual conference on Language and Communication for World Business and the Profession, was Director of the Career Division of the AATSP, organizations, such as the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, the Modern Language Association, the Southern Conference on Language Teaching, the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, and the Society of Training and Development.

T. Bruce Fryer (PhD, University of Texas-Austin) is Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Spanish at the University of South Carolina-Columbia where he taught from 1970-2005. He worked with the Master's of International Business Program for 28 years, and for sixteen years he directed Faculty Development in International Business workshops for Spanish professors through the Center for International Business (CIBER) at USC. He has worked in the area of language for business and the professions in Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, Venezuela, Costa Rica, Spain, Puerto Rico, and Trinidad and Tobago and he continues to serve on numerous editorial boards for business language instruction. He is co-author or editor of twenty articles or chapters dealing with the preparation of teachers for the professions, appearing in the Modern Language Journal, Hispania, and Foreign Language Annals, and 15 books including Spanish for the Business Traveler, and Spanish and Portuguese for Business and the Professions (AATSP), along with this text. Results of his Fulbright study in Equatorial Guinea were published in the Afro-Hispanic Review. In a career spanning 50 years, he has taught Spanish language, linguistics, and culture at all levels of instruction. He currently teaches at the University of South Carolina-Beaufort.

About the Author
Stanley R. Crouch is Professor Emeritus at Michigan State University. He received his undergraduate and M.S. degrees from Stanford University and his Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from the University of Illinois. He is the recipient of the 2001 American Chemical Society Division of Analytical Chemistry Award in Chemical Instrumentation and the 1996 ACS Division of Analytical Chemistry Award for Excellence in Teaching.

F. James Holler is a Professor of Chemistry and recipient of the Alumni Association Great Teacher Award at the University of Kentucky. He received his Ph.D. from Michigan State University. In addition to his role as co-author of several best-selling texts, he is co-creator of the world-famous Periodic Table of Comic Books.

Super-Helpful supplemental text

Awesome. This book is VERY helpful for analytical chem. It's written as a supplement to Skoog's Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry, so it refers to that text, but really, I've learned alot about Excel just from this book. Want to make a groovy looking titration curve? Consult this easy to read, "cookbook" for using Excel to compile the data. Yup, it has been a lifesaver. That and the solution manual. Don't skrimp, this book is worth it.

An Extraordinary Journey for the Reader

I consider the day I found this book in a used book store as perhaps the luckiest "book finding" day of my life. Written in almost lyrical prose, this is a heart stopping, gut wrenching, life-affirming adventure in real life. If you think you understand what the Russian people went through during and after the Bolshevik revolution, you don't. This is history written firsthand; enduring love for country, fellow man, and most of all husband and child; this is heroism, and triumph over appalling fear; and most of all, a story of enduring and unquenchable spirit.

the brutality of the Bolshevik Revolution

Olga Ilyin was a happy young woman of the Russian gentry when the revolution broke out. Her family is separated, and some are killed in battle or coldly executed by the Bolsheviks. In love with a counter-revolutionary whose forces are gradually beaten eastward into Siberia, she arranges to cross from St. Petersburg, then Moscow, across the Siberian plains, all the way to China. This is the story of her unbelievably hard journey battling the freezing winter and fleeing from the Bolsheviks. Part of her journey is by train, some on foot. All this with an infant son. The suffering, the starving, the loss of life, the hideous violent cruelty of the Bolsheviks comes forth in this true narrative like no history book can deliver. Ilyin (a pen name) and her close friends trudge deadly night by deadly night through the dangerous and killing cold across a gigantic continent, turning back, hiding, and detouring, in order to reach the free city of Harbin in China.

This narrative started slowly for me. Ilyin at first seemed complacent about her very comfortable social and financial status, and she could not carry off the glamor and pure gorgeousness of Russian society as Tolstoy and Pasternak could. But once her odyssey began, her writing, which had to have imprinted on her mind in vivid and indelible memory, pulled her reader with her into the horror of the Russian people. All suffered: upper class, middle class, those already in poverty, and peasants in the outlying areas. The war reached them all. They all suffered unspeakably. The Bolsheviks were indiscriminately harsh and cruel. Ilyin makes this horrible time more vivid than any other book I have read on the subject.
There are deeply personal relationships in this story, and there is hope, love, and triumph, but not at the expense of the stark and unspeakable circumstances these people live through (times millions in history). No sentimentality or romanticism here. Yet--as in all stories of the inhumanity of man to man, there is still found the greatest compassion, loyalty, and courage. The writer and some of those she loves are successful in their escape. And with her new husband, for whom she crossed Siberia, she eventually immigrates to the United States. Well worth the read. Engrossing, horrifying, and triumphant all at the same time.

An exceptional book

I have to give this book a five star review because I will always remember it. It does start rather slowly, but once we are introduced to all the characters it picks up speed and excitement. The writing is purely lyrical. This book was written in 1984, and, while reading it, I remembered what is was like to read a book by a truly intelligent and literate author, something I haven't seen for quite awhile. I had to keep reminding myself that English was not her first language. What I most enjoyed about this novel was the spiritual journey the author traveled along during her odyssey. She takes what might be ordinary incidents and illustrates quite clearly why they were important to her and how they enhanced her faith in God and life, not in a preachy way but in an inspired way. The difficulties she encounters seem almost insurmountable, but as she writes, she always seems to be pulled through somehow at the last moment. This is the essence of faith in the midst of sacrifice, violence, and much bloodshed. It gives a grisly picture of the early years of the U.S.S.R, and it also presents a clear picture of everything Russia lost culturally through the Bolsheviks. I had never really considered the artistic history of Russia until I read this book, all the authors and musicians. I purchased this book because of the resounding recommendations in the other reviews, and I would also recommend that you read it. You will learn something and be touched by a woman now long dead.

Valuable Book!

I've been taking German Language classes for 5 semesters. My classes are immersion and while that is great, sometimes it is helpful to see the same concepts explained in English. This book has been a great reference for me to see topics from my classbooks explained from another viewpoint. It also includes lots of exercises to work, and as they mention in the description, the answer key is available online at no extra cost. They say something about a interactive website--I wouldn't go that far--it is basically a huge .pdf document that you can download and reference for later. Also, It took a little clicking around the publishers website to find it (the link provided in the book only gets you part-way).

The authors assume that you know basic German--it is a "review" book after all. But they explain things simply and clearly, starting way back at the basics of sentence structure and advancing from there.

I've really enjoyed using this as a supplemental text to my classroom materials as well as a vehicle for review of what I've learned so far. I highly recommend it!

A good grammar and review

This book, actually written by Kimberly Sparks and Van Horn Vail, is a good review for German -- I used this text in my second year undergraduate German class, and have continued to refer to it as a ready reference. Although intended as a review rather than a beginning text, it does cover in good detail all the important grammar parts of German, vocabulary, pronunciation, and leads into basic sentence structure.

Each chapter includes a particular grammar point explained in easy steps. This is followed by extensive drills and exercises to strengthen the use of that new point as well as previously covered grammar lessons. These drills include German to German exercises, as well as express-in-German drills, with vocabulary presented in a systematic manner. Students will learn a few thousand words with this book.

This book can be used as a supplement to other texts to reinforce drills, as a review, and as a companion to a readings course (which is how the book was used in my course). It is not easy to find any more, but worth having if you come across it.

I am an intermediate student of German and this was a required text for one of my classes. The book does a great job
explaining GRAMMATICAL CONCEPTS. The wording is very easy to understand and isn't overly complicated like so many
grammar books tend to be. Overall, it's a great book. However, it certainly is a REVIEW of grammar. If you are trying to teach yourself the grammar for the first time, look elsewhere. This book really is meant for the classroom, so it would probably be frustrating for
a self-learner.
