Mostly quite easy to digest

I have learned really a lot from this book. Most theorems are clearly explained. Every new theorem is followed first by a simple example, and most theorems have also more advanced examples.
Every subject is followed by self-test questions and problems. Problems are arranged in order of difficulty, the first problems being quite simple and the last ones very difficult.
It's possible to learn from this book even if you haven't understood much on the lectures. The only requirement is that you should have a good basic knowledge on one-variable calculus.

Too much too fast

I had this book for a linear algebra class and it covered very few details. The book doesn't explain very much. There are lots of examples but the examples are not explained very well. Since there are three subjects taught in this book everything seems to be compacted to fit into the one book. If your looking for a book to teach a class, use one that focuses more on the subject matter and not on the field as a whole.

This is one of the better texts for multivariable calculus and has some great chapters for an introductory look at linear algebra and differential equations. I wish I could find a solutions manual. As well, allot of the proofs are elementary which could be a little more advanced.

Chapter 1

HyGain-Telex: Analysis for JIT Production

The HyGain-Telex plant in Lincoln, Nebraska, manufactures antennas. It currently has a U.S. Army contract for Model X32 antennas. The contract requires a production rate of two hundred Model X32s per day. The contract quantity may be changed quarterly.

Chris Piper, the foreman, is collecting data for a JIT project. Piper has selected the X32 antenna base (not the whip part of the antenna, which is fairly simple) for the JIT project. Exhibit 1-1 is a photograph of the base.

Manufacture of the X32

There are several stages of manufacture for the X32 base, which is a cylinder 6 inches in diameter and 10 inches high. These are the basic production processes, and their standard times, with which Piper was concerned:

* Mold the Lexan plastic base. Some holes are molded into the base by use of core plugs. 2.50 minutes.
* Drill and tap (eight operations). A dozen more holes are drilled; half of the drilled and molded-in holes are tapped, and half are installed with "helicoils" -- self-threaded inserts (a rather old technology). Seven drill or tap operations taking from 0.12 to 1.02 minutes; installing helicoils, 1.82 minutes.
* Assemble (epoxy) as "birdcage" (ferrite core, coaxial cable, etc.) inside the Lexan base. 1.78 minutes. (Note: The birdcage is produced as a subassembly, going through twelve operations.) * Foam the assembly. 2.61 minutes.
* Paint. 1.82 minutes.

Flow Data

Piper felt that the place to start was between drill-and-tap and assembly. Drill-and-tap ran one shift, and assembly usually ran two shifts. Piper asked L. G. Smith, the industrial engineer, to find out the flow distance between processes, especially those two processes. Smith scaled off the distances on the factory blueprints and came up with a total flow distance of 1,296 feet, which breaks down as follows: from mold to drill-and-tap, 192 feet; from drill-and-tap to tank assembly, 144 feet; from assembly to paint, 480 feet; and from paint to final prep, 480 feet.

Piper wanted to be sure. "Are those prints current?" he asked. Smith assured him that they were. Just to make sure, Piper got a tape measure and checked some of the distances; they were indeed correct.

For flow-time data, Piper went to Raul Nieves, the scheduler. Nieves pointed out that the flow time from molding to final prep had been "as short as about five days for a few lots, but we are quoting six weeks to marketing." Piper asked Nieves to come up with some sort of average. Nieves did so by putting pieces of colored tape on a few molded bases from several lots over the space of three weeks. The average flow time, found by noting how long it took for the taped units to get to final prep, was seven weeks. One week of that was the flow time from the start of drill-and-tap to assembly.

Question 1. What is the ratio of actual production lead time (or flow-time) to work content time from the start of drill-and-tap to final prep?

Nieves also provided Piper with scheduling and unit-load data. Scheduling released work packets in lot quantities of 2,000. Drilled and tapped bases were forwarded to assembly by forklift truck, in wire-bound pallets holding about 400 bases. In other words, about five forklift trips were required to move one "packet-release" quantity to assembly.

Problems

At this point Piper called a meeting. Smith and Nieves were there, along with Karen Jones, manager of quality assurance; Bob Crane, an inspector; Doug Atkins, a drill press operator; and Ellie Olson, an assembler. Piper announced that the purpose of the meeting was to "brainstorm what can and maybe can't be done to reduce WIP and flow time" between drill-and-tap and assembly. Piper explained that the purpose was to improve and not look for blame. In that spirit, "please speak frankly."

Piper's first question was directed to Atkins: "Doug, there's no setup time on the drill press that you use for the X32 -- it's a dedicated tool, right?" Atkins said that it was.

"How about up time on the drill press? Is it reliable?" asked Piper. Atkins replied that the drill press itself was fine but that the tapping head with spindles in the taps were a problem sometimes: "They break or the bushings loosen," which results in off-center taps or a marred surface around the outside. "Then I have to call maintenance to make adjustments or replace the head."

"About how many hours per month are you down waiting for them to make those adjustments or replacements, Doug?" Atkins estimated about five hours.

Ellie Olson was next. "Ellie, do you have any problems with the bases? Quality problems or running out of bases?" Ellie said that sometimes she did have to wait for the fork truck to bring another wire-bound; she estimated six hours of wait time per month.

The quality problems were the biggest headache, Olson felt, and she looked at Bob Crane, the inspector, for corroboration. Crane agreed that the defect rates were high, especially cracks and fractures around the helicoil inserts. Some, "maybe 5 percent," they thought, were minor defects that Crane or Olson let pass. Crane had figures on how many were defective but repairable and defective-scrapped: 2 percent repaired, 4 percent scrapped.

Karen Jones, quality manager, pointed out that their customer, the Army, had been rejecting an average of 7 percent in recent months. "I believe that the majority of the problems can be traced back to drill-and-tap," she stated.

Piper then asked if anyone knew what level of work-in-process (WIP) there was of bases. Nieves said he had just made a rough count; there were six wire-bounds full at drill-and-tap and eight and a half full at assembly.

Question 2. If fifteen direct labor employees are involved in the production of the Lexan base, what is the ratio of pieces in process to people who could work on them?

JIT Opportunities

At this point the group began brainstorming on J IT opportunities. Some of the options they discussed:

1. Setup reduction (adjust and replace spindles/bushings) on the drill presses. To this suggestion, everyone nodded their heads, but no one commented pro or con.
2. Cut transit quantities. Nieves (scheduler) protested: "The fork truck drivers would be making more trips."
3. Adopt kanban. Nieves liked the idea.
4. Use process control charts in drill-and-tap. Everyone thought it was about time to do some of this.
5. Adopt total preventive maintenance. This was Piper's (the foreman's) idea. The others showed little reaction; they seemed not to know what that meant.
6. Put in conveyors. Smith (the I.E.) offered that one; nobody challenged the idea.
7. Slash the buffer stock. Nieves suggested this, pointing out that inventory counting was a headache anyway. Olson was indignant: "I run out of bases too often the way it is."
8. Get rid of the packet-release quantities. Smith suggested this but admitted that he did not know what kind of scheduling might replace the packet-release system.
9. Bring the design engineers in to come up with a better design of the base. Everyone smiled and nodded vigorously.
10. Expand the size of the task force (which they were calling themselves by that time), including a customer (Army) representative. This was Jones's suggestion, which was met by a couple of favorable nods.
11. Move a drill press into the assembly department. This was Smith's idea. Crane (inspector) said that "if we do that I won't have to inspect the base

Very, Very Helpful

Aldon Morris writes the history of the Civil Rights Movement as the gradual organization of black communities in the South in response to Jim Crow. Morris' account begins with early protests in North Carolina, Tennessee and other peripheral states that multiplied and culminated in the more well-known actions in Alabama and Georiga. Throughout the account, Morris emphasizes the indigenous nature of the movement - black communities organizing around black institutions (the black church) with their own financial and infrastructural resources.

The research for the project was conducted via interviews with many of the movement's leaders, so Morris is able to give first-hand accounts of the way protests were conducted and of the motivations for organizing in certain ways at certain times. His account is extraordinarily rich and touches on the interplay between the often conflicting personalities of movement leaders. He describes the means and motivation of the adoption of the non-violent protest method and, to a lesser extent, the roles played by women in the movement. He also deals in passing with the ideological treatment of homosexuality by movement leaders.

As an account of how the civil rights movement developed in the South, Morris' book is exceptional. It reads as well as a novel and uses the input of first-hand sources to make its story as much personal as academic, without losing its integrity.

Some have argued that Morris neglects the role of women in the movement and this might be a fair criticism. But inasmuch as he argues that the civil rights movement was organized around and by the leaders of the black church, he justifies his focus on the (male) Baptist minister as a principle leader of movement activities. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to better understand how the Civil Rights Movement was carried out in the United States.

Articulate and provocative, Aldon Morris' study of the American Civil Rights Movement is a comprehensive and comprehensible analysis of a strategic struggle for human survival and essential dignity. Emphasizing that African Americans have rarely accepted the subordinate position forced upon them, that the Civil Rights Movement was carefully orchestrated rather than a series of random events, and that women played a critical role in the organization and implementation of the movement, Morris incisively resurrects and dismantles official discourses. In the tradition of John Hope Franklin's "From Slavery to Freedom", Lerone Bennett's "Forced into Glory", and Ivan Van Sertima's "They Came Before Columbus", Morris reconstructs history with a fresh perspective. Morris' extensive use of the interview technique enables the reader to probe the minds of the makers and shakers of the movement, as we hear them speak in their own words. Somewhat academic in its approach, yet eminently readable, "Origins of the Civil Rights Movement" can be understood and appreciated by middle school students, academicians, and history buffs alike. It is a must-read for those interested in a complete understanding of American history in general and of African American history in particular.

I've been rereading the book "The Origins of the Civil Rights Movement" by Aldon D. Morris.  I had it sitting on my shelf since I bought it, and skimmed it some previously. But the other day I started reading it again and realized it was far more valuable than I'd previously thought. It's not just a book on the history of the Civil Rights Movement. It's also a manual on how to create and sustain a successful movement. The author is a good place to go if you want to learn how to create and sustain a movement.

He talks about the importance of decentralized organization, cooperative and collaborative coordination, the role of movement centers, Movement Halfway “safe” Houses for activists and organizers; and the role of both organization, legal and direct action in carrying out the goals of a movement.

Useful as a reference, not as a book to learn from

I agree with Van Denburg's evaluation.
I am a graduate student in Psychology, and I find the Hays text mostly illegible. His prose is dense and his explanations rely very heavily on mathematical formulae instead of real-world or logical/verbal descriptions. Furthermore, he falls into the typical "math textbook" pit of giving solutions to only the example problems that are exceptions to what one would usually encounter.
This is especially bad considering that my concentration specializes in statistical inference, and I've studied mathematics through differential equations (including linear algebra, multivariate).
Worse, Hays has a tendency to use different symbols to represent variables compared to other statistical texts (and in some cases, the rest of the world!)
Lastly, the tables that Hays has in the back of his book are not notated. He does not explain what each table represents, or what the x or y axis are. In one case, he has two entries for each lookup in the ANOVA Power of Association (omega squared) (Table XII, page 1032). Nowhere in the table does it mention what these two values are for.

I am currently relying on several other texts to understand statistics for the social/behaviourial sciences. If you are extremely comfortable with mathematics to describe your behaviourial tests, you may find this book valuable. If you prefer a more descriptive approach, I suggest another one.

Invaluable reference; Not for pleasure reading

Hays's text is not meant for everyone; hence the mixed reviews. It was not the primary source from which I gained my knowledge of statistics; however it serves as an invaluable reference. Unlike some of the other reviewers, I had little difficulty understanding the material as Hays presented it. Some of the criticisms are points well-taken; for example a lack of annotation in the power tables at the end of the book (which are still decipherable if you know what you're looking at).
This text is for the mathematically inclined-it is not a "how-to" book, rather a "why" book that thoroughly explains the theory behind a variety of popular inferential techniques. If this is the sort of knowledge you are seeking, Hays is the book for you. If you are interested in a more "common-sense" or applied approach, perhaps you should look elsewhere.

Masterpiece

This text is a true CLASSIC in the field of statistics. It is unique, extremely well-written, and a book you will return to time after time if you are serious about learning and understanding statistics. Hays' unique style is such that in his explanations, he takes you a step back, then two steps forward. While it can be said that some writers on statistics don't really understand the subject themselves (which makes it almost impossible to learn from them), this is definitely not the case with Hays's text. Hays' grasp of statistics is unmatched.

Trust me on this one

Out of the sheer horror that someone recommended this book over Baugh and Cable's A History of the English Language and several other wonderful histories available, I find myself writing my first review. I was unlucky enough to have this book as an undergrad a number of years ago, and along with a general dislike of it that I've always carried, I specifically remember that the exercises were impenetrable. Now that I am getting a PhD in the history of the English language, I can safely say that I am achieving this goal despite this book. It is adequate in some ways but nowhere near as good as some of the other options. The only real bonus I can see is that the price is good.

Joseph Williams's Origins of the English Language: A Social & Linguistic History accurately highlights the history of the English language from the evolution of man clear through to Modern English that we speak today, providing enough knowledge for anyone to completely understand the origin of English. Intended for use as a textbook in college-level English history classes, Williams style is one that is conservative yet informative when he touches on many of the major aspects of the evolution of English, backing each up with references that make for a quite impressive bibliography with over 200 references. By reinforcing the facts that he mentions, Williams's style is one that is hard to misinterpret yet very informational and easy to follow. Some of this may be due, in part, to the assistance that Williams received from various university professors while writing this piece. Although at times Williams repeats his theories and arguments, he warns of this in his preface so that the reader is aware that this repetition is only to emphasize major points. Overall, I feel that this book is one of the most indepth yet comprehensible books on the history of the English language.

More Like an Elementary Text Than "A Social and Liguistic History"

Out of date (1986) and unmpressive to begin with. It tries to cover too much (the second part of the book is about grammar and pronounciation), has too many long word lists and reads like an elementary introductory text -- lots of questions to the reader. Much less in on what is promised in the subtitle (a social and linguistic history) than I hoped: for example, the issue of what happened to Celtic is barely mentioned.

Excellent --I mean outstanding in every way.

I have two unrelated degrees, and had only high school biology. I use this book for self-study. It is perfect. Its long list of reviewers gave me confidence in its lessons.

I find it plain and understandable. The explanations and definitions could not be made simpler. Superbly illustrated, the book also makes good use of boldface type and color. When a new term is introduced, its pronunciation is given right there, and selected useful etymologies are given in the margins.

It begins with an overview of biology and the basics of scientific method, experimentation, what a hypothesis is, inference and theories, microscopy, etcetera. Then there is a GREAT review of basic chemistry, and the book logically progresses into biochemistry, cell theory, reproduction, and on "up." There are no gaps; everything is built on what came before.

It is concise yet interesting because it cites quick examples. For example, the section on vacuoles explains how these intracellular toxic waste containers can be beneficial to the plant: "For instance, the poisons that certain acacia trees have in their vacuoles provide a defense against plant-eating animals." No chapter is without such examples that cite particular organisms to make a point. Where warranted, there is longer, intelligent discussion of organisms that don't clearly fall on one side of the fence. For example, there is a paragraph on how Volvox (a green algae) exhibits properties of both unicellular and multicellular organisms.

There are interesting ecology sidebars on topics such as rain forests, global warming, and acid rain. Ecology is also not forgotten in the main text.

The questions at the end of each chapter are also well thought out: There are sections of straightforward multiple choice, short answer, and vocabulary questions. Then there is a "Test Your Thinking" section with clever, fun questions that require one to reflect on the material rather than just regurgitate answers from rote; these questions often involve material from previous chapters, but are never vague nor require knowledge of something that was not presented before.

It is complete. All 1100 pages considered, I am honestly at a loss for anything unfavorable to say. Too much to list here. It is so well done that I was dumbfounded to see any negative remarks at all!

Frustration

This book is not organized logically and provides an inappropriate level of detail in some areas while offering only very basic information in others. As a novice teacher, I find it frustrating. The section and chapter review questions are also too ambiguous. Students have a hard time determining what exactly questions are asking. I am frustrated by this book. It doesn't work for me or my ninth grade students. I give it two stars because I DO like the writing excercises and "Biology in Progress" sections.

Top of the line in Biology.

This book is amazing. You will know all you need to know of life and beyond with this amazing book. It goes through cells, to genetics, to anatomy, animals, bacteria, disections, maps of organisms such as the human body, animals bodies and etc. This book is top of the line and couldn't get any better. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know anything about biology, or "the study of life". Ha, see what I already learned.

Michael R. Czinkota is one of the foremost experts on international business and marketing in the world. Thorough Coverage of Every Facet of International Marketing

This textbook is organized into three major sections:
Part One: The International Environment - includes chapters on the concept of global marketing, the world economy, foreign economies, the people of the world and the political-legal environment.
Part Two: International Marketing Management - includes chapters on global marketing strategy, international marketing intelligence, product policy, new product development, foreign market entry, foreign market channels and global logistics, promotion and advertising, pricing, and marketing of services.
Part Three: Coordinating International Marketing - includes chapters on planning, organizing and control of international marketing, information technology and the future of international marketing.
The text is liberally sprinkled with interesting and relevant illustrations, case studies and examples. As either a textbook or reference source, it is an excellent up-to-date overview on every aspect of international marketing.
My only criticism is that the page after page of dense text could have been enlivened considerably with the use of color graphics and illustrations.

Comprehensive Discussion of International Marketing

As a Georgetown University student who took the author's class, I found this textbook to be the most comprehenisve International Marketing source around. I currently own two textbooks written by the same authors because of the book's clear, organized topics. This textbook is perfect for beginners who would like to learn more about International Marketing as a guide for professionals who have to make challenging decisions.
