I was looking for a book that was very clear, written in a way that the students would find interesting, and which had many examples and policy applications based on current events. In addition, I had a strong preference for a text that would cover micro before macro, and that emphasized areas of wide agreement among economists in the area of macroeconomics. I found that the Baumol-Blinder text best met these criteria. I think that overall the Baumol-Blinder text is excellent. The macro part in particular is much stronger than what I have seen in most other texts."

My overall opinion of the book is very high; it is in the top several in this field. I think the overall strength is quality of writing and balance of coverage. The students find it readable and very helpful. I believe that it presents most material in the standard manner and explains concepts in appropriate depth on a level that is introductory but not condescending to students. This is not an easy task.

My overall opinion is very favorable; I have stuck with B&B since the 6th edition. It's greatest strength is that it is comprehensive and a very good principles text.

About the Author
William J. Baumol received his B.S.S. at the College of the City of New York and his Ph.D. at the University of London. He is professor of economics at New York University and senior research economist and professor emeritus at Princeton University. He is a frequent management consultant to major firms in a wide variety of industries in the United States and other countries as well as to a number of governmental agencies. He has been president of the American Economic Association, and three other professional societies. He is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, created by the U.S. Congress, and a member of the American Philosophical Society, founded by Benjamin Franklin. Dr. Baumol is the author of more than 35 books as well as hundreds of journal and newspaper articles that have been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Alan S. Blinder earned his B.A. at Princeton University, his M.A. at the London School of Economics and Ph.D. at MIT. He teaches at Princeton University and is the author of the best seller, After the Music Stopped, about the financial crisis and its aftermath. Dr. Blinder served on President Clinton's first Council of Economic Advisers and then as vice chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, thereby playing a role in formulating both the fiscal and monetary policies of the 1990s. Dr. Blinder, now a regular columnist for THE WALL STREET JOURNAL, has written newspaper and magazine columns on economic policy for more than thirty years. He is a past Vice President and a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association.

great book

i bought this book for an economics class and it is one of the best textbooks i have ever used. it is easy to read and understand, plus it doesn't get nearly as boring as a lot of other textbooks. it is written for the common person and uses lots of examples to illustrate ideas - this is a great book!

Chem. text book for college.

Hi I am a college student,Junior.Before I encounterd with this book, I did not like studying chemistry, but since then I have been reading this text book, I get better and better understandings of CHEMISTRY, and want to understand it more. So I dicided to continue studying this subject even though I didn't plan to do so. I hope eveyone who struggles with learning chemistry knows about this book. ALso I want fuculty members to consider of this book THis book really think of students!

While conceding that many mainstream professionals and laypersons regard lesbian families as "inherently and fundamentally deviant," she emphatically disagrees. This scholarly yet accessible study sets forth a five-stage "life cycle model" of family experience for cohabiting lesbians, whether or not they have children. Stages 1-3 involve becoming a couple, solidifying the partnership through ongoing relational work, and the trials and deepening intimacy of the middle years. In stage 4, generativity, each partner achieves links to the future, whether through parenting, social activism or other pursuits. The final stage, the over-65 years, encompasses challenges such as retirement, increased togetherness, lack of income, health emergencies and "widowhood." Slater also discusses coping mechanisms by which lesbian couples deal with social rejection, homophobia and isolation.

More valuable than any biography written on Hemingway

I was given a beat up hardcover edition of this book that a friend had found on the street in Brooklyn. By the looks of it (moldy and wrinkled at the edges) and fact that I'd never heard of it I sort of figured it would be a poorly written book. I was entirely wrong. After three days I reread it and I still think that compared to some of the biographies I've read this little book does more to explain the man and his character better than any of them.
Samuelson creates a world lost in time: Key West in the 1930's, before it became an overpopulated Mecca for drunken tourists. The reader is welcomed aboard the Pilar, not only as a spectator but also as a member of the crew, fishing the stream, drinking short sips of whiskey and occasionally discussing what makes good writing.
Arnold Samuelson's conversations reveal the stoic and sometimes brutally honest characteristics of one of America's most beloved writers. If you want to understand Hemingway, how he thought, what he valued, and the way he carried himself then I would highly recommend this book.

Superb read, and with Hemingway's advice for writers!

I read WITH HEMINGWAY not because I was interested in Hemingway (I am, but mildly so), but because my father was from Key West, I have many happy childhood memories there, am returning for a brief trip in the near future, and wanted to immerse myself in its historical milieu. Little of the book is actually about life in Key West, but it is nevertheless a superb read, because author Arnold Samuelson is a skilled storyteller.

An aspiring writer as a young man, Samuelson had wanted to meet the great Hemingway, and certainly didn't expect that Hemingway would feel fatherly toward him, taking him on as an employee on his boat, the Pilar, and mentoring him as a writer. The result is a compelling narrative of his year with Hemingway, brimming with personal reflections about the man and their experience fishing together.

The surprise for me, since I have no interest in fishing, is that some of the fishing episodes were so well written and emotionally compelling that I read some of then twice. What stands out most in this regard is the day the crew encountered literally thousands of dolphins leaping in the water around them:

"At the top of their jump they appeared to be suspended motionless in midair, heads erect, hanging from an invisible line, before they turned and went down. Then hundreds of them began taking long, horizontal leaps and the air was filled with them, in the distance looking like a flock of birds flying low over the water, swooping down, coming up and diving again."

At least as rich an experience as reading the fishing episodes is the advice Hemingway gave Samuelson about writing - a goldmine of at least ten pages which, as a writer myself, I copied word for word into my writing journal. Some tidbits from Hemingway:

"When you first start to write you get all the kick and the reader gets none, but after you learn to work it's your object to convey everything to the reader so that he remember it is not a story he had read but something that happened to himself. That's the true test of writing. When you can do that, the reader gets the kick and you don't get any."

"The most important thing I've learned about writing is never write too much at a time.... Never pump yourself dry. Leave a little for the next day. The main thing is to know when to stop."

More Than Just THE CANTERBURY TALES.

If you have any interest in Chaucer or The Canterbury Tales, then THE COMPLETE POETRY AND PROSE OF GEOFFREY CHAUCER is a volume that you must own. As the title says, this is the complete poetry and prose of Chaucer, written in the original Middle English. The Canterbury Tales and Chaucer's longer poems are relatively easier to find, but some of his other writings are more difficult to obtain, such as some of his shorter poems. This is one of the only collections that I know that includes all those works and in the original Middle English. The book is quality bound and the text includes some very useful introductions, footnotes, and commentaries. A great gift for any person who loves the work of Chaucer.

Gotta Love That Chaucer!!!

This book is really nice. It looks good. The print is nice - not too big or too small. And it's really well bound. If you're looking for an all purpose book of Chaucer, this is the one. The volume also includes great foot notes, glosses, and historical commentary. It is heirloom quality. It is expensive, but if you like quality literature AND quality binding, you've found your match.

About the Author
Pearl M. Oliner and Samuel P. Oliner are Professor of Education and Professor of Sociology, respectively, at Humboldt State University and co-authors of The Altruistic Personality: Rescuers of Jews in Nazi Europe.

Lawrence Baron is the Director of the Lipinsky Institute for Judaic Studies and Nasir Professor of Modern Jewish History at San Diego State University.

Rabbi Harold M. Schulweis, one of the most respected spiritual leaders and teachers of his generation, has been a rabbi at Valley Beth Shalom in Encino, California, for close to forty years. He is the founding chairman of the Jewish Foundation for the Righteous, an organization that identifies and offers grants to those non-Jews who risked their lives to save Jews threatened by the agents of Nazi savagery. If you have any interest in the Holocaust and are looking for a reference piece unlike any other on this history, this is it. It gives clear and concise summaries and truly breaks down the characteristics of altruistic people.

Every teacher, social service provider and parent should read this book. It is not an easy read, but well worth the effort. One key conclusion is that discipline techniques in early childhood have profound, lasting effect on adult personalities and values.

A Psychology's Study of Altruism Surprises this Reader

This is a study of the worst years of the past century. It seeks to discover who tried to save people from the Nazis and who did not. It isn't intended to point fingers but rather to find reasons or influences in their earlier lives that caused them to respond as rescuers or not to respond. There was one woman who told this story: There were quite a few Jewish refugees in our basement when I got a phone call (from another rescuer) telling me that the gestapo was approaching...I rushed to send them away then as the doorbell rang I realized that their papers were still on my nearby desk - I shoved them up under my son's sweater, opened the door and then told my son to play outside. Today I can hardly believe I endangered my 9 year old in such a way but things were different then. The questioning began, she was answering the men around her when she suddenly realized that one of them was facing the backyard and could clearly see the Jewish people rushing away. She tried not to let her eyes look there; he turned around and joined the group which soon left. I have never been so struck by any book.
