Bread and Butter Journey, by Anne Colver, is a masterpiece in children's liturature. It is perfect for any age. Bread and Butter Journey is a great story that illustrates the hardships early pioneers experienced on the pioneer trail. It is a story of one girl's struggles as she leaves her home, deep in the Philadelphia Mountains because her father feels it is his duty to help expand the borders of the newly formed United States by settling the West. She, her friends Tess and Trudy, and their mothers must travel hundreds of miles, with her fifteen year old brother to lead them, to the houses their fathers have already built on the frontier. On the trail she and her friends experience fear, illness, and sadness due to loss. Their emotions are extremely clear. There are few other books that are as clear, realistic, and well-written as Bread and Butter Journey. It is one of my favorites.

This sequal to "Bread and butter Indian" tells the story of a little girl and her family's journey on foot from eastern Pennsylvania to the northwestern corner of the state. The time was shortly after the American Revolutionary War, when the people were urged to settle farther west to expand the country. This journey was taken entirely on foot, through small settlements and wilderness where there were dangers from wild animals and unfriendly natives. And easy read, something that can be read aloud easily to children

This book was given to me by my 2nd grade teacher on the last day of school. She and I both knew that my family was moving and that I would be at a different school the next year. I read the book during the summer and several times after that. I think it was the spark that ignited by interest in history.

Excellent Book!

I recently picked up my wife's copy of this book. She used this text when in college. I am amazed at how wonderful this book is (I am not sure the author would agree with the grammatical structure of the previous sentence, but this is an informal review). The book is separated into 3 parts: Elements of Research, Techniques, and Experiments. The section on "Elements of Research" is wonderful and is a must read for all pchem students. This part is an excellent reference for any scientist. The "Techniques" part is out of date as far as computers are concerned, but 4 out of the 6 chapters are still relevant dealing with glass handling/blowing, vacuum techniques, temperature measurements, and general instrumentation guts. The "Experiments" part makes up ~ 50% of the text (350 of 800 pages). These experiments represent a good range of both thermodynamics-related and quantum mechanics-related concepts.

This is a very powerful account of the atrocities committed by Unit 731. It was a very deeply emotional experience to read this book. I had an interesting discovery when I compared the original UK edition of the book and the US edition (the one shown here). The UK edition has a chapter on the alleged biological warfare by the US in the Korean War and its possible connection to Ishii and some former Unit 731 members. That chapter was removed in the US edition.

Grim story of medical research gone wrong

A serious read to anyone interested in hidden aspects of WWII.

If you think that there were atrocities in Nanking or by the hands of Josef Mengele, then you have to read Unit 731. Wallace and Williams do a good job of writing and documenting the start, operation and aftermath of Unit 731. The book reads like a history story and is an easy read.

What starts out as a medical officer's (Siro Ishii) quest to gain status as researcher turns into a chamber of horrors. The medical research unit 731 was opened in Pingfan, China prior to WWII to develop vaccines for various diseases. Later, the unit began to mass-produce diseases such as plague, cholera and anthrax. For instance, infected fleas were bred by the kilograms to be dropped in Allied countries. Some of which were dropped on the North American west coast which were often just thought of as fire-bomb balloons.

Hundreds of innocent people, including white-Russians, Chinese, Koreans, Americans, Australians and British were subject to inhumane experiments of being repeatedly exposed to diseases, forced to work to exhaustion, starvation and live dissection.

The most brutal part of this whole story is that the head of Unit 731 was granted immunity in trade for his information, rather than have it turned over to the Russians.

This is a gruesome story of evil. Fortunately, writers like Williams and Wallace had the determination to record these atrocities and expose the cover up.

The book "Unit 731" was a shocking view how the Japanese were able to conduct experiments with live prisoners and war prisoners . I was under the thoughts only Germany was the only country that had been doing atrocities against mankind. A book about at the end of WWII that the American government was willing to over look the experiments conducted in return for the information collected. This book is a real page turner for the stories given of what happen in Nankin. I came across it by accident and was very glad I did if you have a love for history or just want to read something about the Japanese and WWII that I am sure you were never told in school this is the book for you. I was intrigued from beginning to end. I never knew this went on and I have a whole new view of the war and what went happened to many innocent victims all in the name of research.
