The Great Gatsby deserves its accolades!

This has to be hands-down one of my favorite pieces of literature. F. Scott Fitzgerald, part of the "Lost Generation" of writers from the 1920s, very imaginatively describes the egotistical indifference that affluence sometimes generates... and the dangers that hedonistic egocentrism can bring. His depiction of the "haves" and "have-nots" is dead-on accurate- and the naiveté and haughtiness of his "newly rich" characters is hauntingly ingenuous. His metaphorical use of color is outstanding (the blue lawns, the green light, the yellow haze). This is a story of those who have wealth, and those who want it; of the elusiveness and hollowness of the "American Dream" ; of the sad reality that with affluence sometimes comes carelessness-which leads to a life filled with a self-absorbed, wanton, petty emptiness. It's a story of a melancholy romance- where money runs deeper than love, where happiness is forsaken for greed. The ending is perfect- very resonant and very candid. This novel reads fluidly; it is not awkward or superficial- but rather deep and profound and telling. Perhaps Fitzgerald's subtleness and satarization in The Great Gatsby may be lost on some readers- but please don't pass up this gem!

This book is organized alphabetically; to give a sense of its scope it begins:aalmutter, abalone, akule, Alaska pollock, alga, anchovy, Artic char, ark shell, aspic (not a fish but useful for fish recipes), Atka mackerel, barnacle, barracuda ... in short, you'll be hard pressed to find in your fish market something not covered here.
For each fish, the book gives information regarding their looks (there are ample photos), where they grow, their culinary uses ... and for many of the fish, recipes. To take a simple example, for black sea bass it gives recipes for steamed sea bass, sea bass Lisbon style, and sea bass chowder.
The recipes are reliable - easy to follow and well proportioned. This is everything you'll ever need or want in a fish cooking resource.

About the Author
A distinguished professor of economics at Pepperdine University's Seaver College, Robert Sexton is a graduate of California Lutheran College and received his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado. Dr. Sexton writes frequently for economic and business journals and is the author of nine books on economics, including his newly released EXPLORING ECONOMICS and Survey of ECON published by South-Western/Cengage Learning. His research spans American economic history, economic policy analysis, statutes and enforcement costs, public choice, regional economics, migration, and economic education. Professor Sexton has been a visiting professor at UCLA and was Pepperdine's 1991 Professor of the Year. His professional achievements have been recognized with the Howard A. White Memorial Teaching Award, the Luckman Distinguished Teaching Fellowship, and multiple Merit Acceleration Awards for excellence in teaching and research.

About the Author
Dr. Scott Besley, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Finance, earned his DBA and MBA degrees from Florida State University. A well-respected author and instructor, Dr. Besley has published numerous research articles in various academic journals and has co-authored two of the leading textbooks in corporate finance that are used at universities around the world. His research interests include areas of corporate finance, working capital management, governance, and investment anomalies. Dr. Besley is also a frequently requested presenter at professional conferences and is actively involved in numerous finance and professional organizations. When he is not teaching or pursuing research interests, Dr. Besley is heavily involved in his local community.

Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Maximizing shareholder value

I used this book for a 500-level MBA finance class, and I have to admit I liked it. The first 3/4's of the book drive home the financial manager's objective: Maximizing shareholder value. It does this consistently, and actually got me (A Sales Manager) to understand why profit needs to take a back seat to value.

Like all introductory texts, it skimps a little on complexity. However, I truly have an appreciation now for finance. Many decisions my company makes now make sense. Though I have little need to apply financial concepts in my current job, I can give better `business reason' explanations to my reports when they ask. Which is why I began pursuing an MBA in the first place.

Enough to avoid Finance mistakes

This new edition of the classical title looks very informative and meaningful. Perhaps a little bit more strong in the mathematical treatment will provide the customers with a text more atractive. Anyhow, it is still a good text for beginners.
