About the Author
Frederick Bettelheim is a Distinguished University Research Professor at Adelphi University and a Visiting Scientist at the National Eye Institute. He has co-authored every edition of INTRODUCTION TO GENERAL, ORGANIC AND BIOCHEMISTRY and several Laboratory Manuals. He is the author of EXPERIMENTAL PHYSICAL CHEMISTRY and co-author of numerous monographs and research articles. Professor Bettelheim received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis.

Joseph M. Landesberg is a professor in the Department of Chemistry at Adelphi University. He came to Adelphi University in the fall of 1966. Prior to that, he was at Columbia University where he took a postdoctoral position with Professor Gilbert Stork. He received his Ph.D. from Harvard University where he wrote his thesis under the guidance of Professor Roy A. Olofson. Dr. Landesberg did his undergraduate work at Rutgers University.

Extremely confusing

The introduction to each experiment is extremely poor in this lab manual. Without explanation from another resource, such as the accompanying textbook or from a professor, you'll pull your hair out trying to understand what it's trying to teach. Additionally, many of the post-lab questions seem to have been pulled out of thin air. Without extra help, you will most likely struggle with many of them.

I saved myself over 130 dollars because I bought my book through Amazon instead of through the bookstore at my college! This is a different version of Organic and Biochemistry by Frederick A. Bettelheim but the experiments are the same and they are in different order.

About the Author
Donald L. Pavia earned his BS degree in chemistry from Reed College and his PhD in organic chemistry from Yale University. In 1970, he joined the faculty at Western Washington University as Assistant Professor and now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. He is the coauthor of two organic laboratory books that include techniques and experiments: INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A MICROSCALE APPROACH (Cengage Learning), and A SMALL SCALE APPROACH TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES (Cengage Learning), as well as MICROSCALE AND MACROSCALE TECHNIQUES IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY (Cengage Learning), which highlights techniques to be used with a faculty member's own experiments. He is a co-author, with Gary M. Lampman, George S. Kriz and James R. Vyvyan of an organic spectroscopy book, INTRODUCTION TO SPECTROSCOPY (Cengage Learning). Professor Pavia's research interests center on the synthesis and reactions of valence tautomeric and photochromic compounds, especially pyrylium-3-oxide tautomers. Autoxidations are a special interest. His other interests include the use of computers in teaching organic chemistry, both for lecture presentation and for the simulation of laboratories. He is the author of several computer programs. One such program is SQUALOR (Simulated Qualitative Organic Analysis) for which he won the 1986 EDUCOM/NCRIPTAL award. The program is designed for teaching the methods for solving organic unknowns.

Gary M. Lampman earned his BS degree in chemistry from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his PhD in organic chemistry from the University of Washington. In 1964, he joined the faculty at Western Washington University as Assistant Professor, rising to Professor in 1973. He received the Outstanding Teaching Award for the College of Arts and Sciences in 1976. He now holds the title of Professor Emeritus. Teaching has always been an important part of his life. Contact with students invigorates him. He is the coauthor of two organic laboratory books that include techniques and experiments: INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A MICROSCALE APPROACH (Cengage Learning), and A SMALL SCALE ARPPROACH TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES (Cengage Learning), as well as MICROSCALE AND MACROSCALE TECHNIQUES IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY (Cengage Learning), which highlights techniques to be used with a faculty member's own experiments. He is a co-author, with Donald L. Pavia, George S. Kriz, and James R. Vyvyan of an organic spectroscopy book, INTRODUCTION TO SPECTROSCOPY, Fourth Edition (Cengage Learning). Professor Lampman also is the author of the computer program for teaching organic nomenclature: ORGANIC NOMENCLATURE: AN INTRODUCTION TO THE IUPAC SYSTEM. His research interests center on synthetic methods involving the reaction of free radicals on unsaturated cobaloximes (vitamin B12 model compounds), synthesis of strained small ring compounds, and chemical education. He is the author of 18 papers in these areas. He is a member of the American Chemical Society (Organic and Chemical Education divisions), and the Washington College Chemistry Teachers Association.

George S. Kriz is Professor of Chemistry at Western Washington University. He earned his B.S. degree in chemistry from the University of California, and his Ph.D. from Indiana University, Bloomington, IN. In 1967 he joined the faculty at Western Washington University and recently served as department chair. He served as the General Chair of the 17th Biennial Conference on Chemical Education for 2001-2002. Professor Kriz was honored with the Peter J. Elich Excellence in Teaching Award (College of Arts and Sciences), Western Washington University, in 2000 and the Distinguised Service Award from the Division of Chemical Education, American Chemical Society (2010). He is the co-author with Donald Pavia, Gary Lampman, and Randall Engel of two organic laboratory books that include both techniques and experiments: INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A MICROSCALE APPROACH (Cengage Learning), and A SMALL SCALE APPROACH TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES (Cengage Learning). Their book, MICROSCALE AND MACROSCALE TECHNIQUES IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY (Cengage Learning), includes techniques only, and can be used with a faculty member's own experiments. He is a co-author, with Donald Pavia, Gary Lampman, and James Vyvyan, of an organic spectroscopy book, INTRODUCTION TO SPECTROSCOPY (Cengage Learning). He has co-authored with Donald Pavia, Gary Lampman, and George Kriz INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES: A MICROSCALE APPROACH (Cengage Learning), and A SMALL SCALE INTRODUCTION TO ORGANIC LABORATORY TECHNIQUES (Cengage Learning). Their book, MICROSCALE AND MACROSCALE TECHNIQUES IN THE ORGANIC LABORATORY (Cengage Learning), includes techniques only, and can be used with a faculty member's own experiments. Don't sell this book back!

An outstanding lab text for sophomore level 1-yr organic courses. Any chemistry/physical science major should not sell this book back at the end of the semester! Half of the book is dedicated to experiments which while informative is not the real gem here. The other half of the book covers techniques in organic and microscale chemistry. If you ever need to build a chromatographic column or do vacuum filtration again, you will be glad that you kept this book in your library.
The techniques section alone justifies buying this book. Chemistry majors, microbiologists, environmental scientists and engineers will all find this text valuable in their future careers.

Whats to say? Its a well written book, the experiments are understandable. The binding on this book proved to be rather fragile for me. I'm by no means rough on my books (gotta sell them back....), but the binding completely fell apart by the end of my semester.

About the Author
Gary M. Walton became the Founding Dean of the Graduate School of Management at the University of California, Davis in 1981 and is Professor of Economics Emeritus at the University of California, Davis. In addition, he is President of the Foundation for Teaching Economics, where he has designed and administered highly acclaimed economics and leadership programs (domestically and internationally) for high school seniors selected for their leadership potential, as well as for high school teachers. He credits much of his personal success to his coach at the University of California, Berkeley, the legendary Brutus Hamilton (U.S. Head Coach of Track and Field in the 1952 Olympics), and his success as an economist to his doctoral dissertation advisor, Douglass C. North (1993 Nobel Laureate in Economics).

Hugh Rockoff is Professor of Economics at Rutgers University and a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research. He has written extensively on banking and monetary history and wartime price controls. He enjoys teaching economic history to undergraduates and credits his success as an economist to his doctoral dissertation advisor, Robert W. Fogel (1993 Nobel Laureate in Economics).

This is definitely the best introductory book there is on the subject. This was a supplemental book for an undergraduate class of mine, but I read it anyway. The authors lucid writing allows this book to be thoroughly understood by all readers despite their backround in economics. I truly believe that this book should be required reading for all history, political science, finance, sociology, and economics majors.

Unlike most books on the history of anything, this book starts from the beginning. The authors start off discussing explorers and empires and then go into colonization. Extremely informative on the economics of different regions in colonial America and the Industrial Revolution.

THIS is how to build a textbook!

Con Mucho Gusto is a logical, well-sequenced, detailed, and user-friendly textbook with superb support materials. I began learning Spanish with this text in university in 1985 and am now teaching with it in my university night classes. This work puts to shame the modern "whole language" muddled mess that has been infiltrating pedagogy in the United States. Con Mucho Gusto provides a fine framework for learning and practice, allows the student to work outside of class with greater facility, and can be supplemented with as much realia and authentic practice as desired. I give this work my very highest recommendation as both student and teacher!

A very good beginning

We have used this book as a Spanish tutorial. It covers the material that one needs to get a good foundation in the language. We found the exercises a bit repetitious in some cases. More variation may be better but they do drill on the material presented. This book has a far better sequence of presentation than many Spanish texts.

About the Author
Dr. Scott Besley, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Finance, earned his DBA and MBA degrees from Florida State University. A well-respected author and instructor, Dr. Besley has published numerous research articles in various academic journals and has co-authored two of the leading textbooks in corporate finance that are used at universities around the world. His research interests include areas of corporate finance, working capital management, governance, and investment anomalies. Dr. Besley is also a frequently requested presenter at professional conferences and is actively involved in numerous finance and professional organizations. When he is not teaching or pursuing research interests, Dr. Besley is heavily involved in his local community.

Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

About the Author
K. Douglas Hoffman earned his master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Kentucky and his bachelor's degree from The Ohio State University. He has been formally recognized for teaching excellence and has served as past education coordinator for the Services Marketing Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association. Dr. Hoffman currently is a professor of marketing and has taught such courses as Principles of Marketing, Services Marketing, E-Marketing, Retail Management, and Marketing Management. His primary teaching and research passion is services marketing. He launched the first services marketing classes at Mississippi State University, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, and Colorado State University. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Hoffman was actively involved in his family-owned golf course business, served as a distribution analyst for Volkswagen of America, and worked as a research analyst for the Parker Hannifin Corp. His current research and consulting activities are primarily in the areas of customer service/satisfaction and services marketing education. Dr. Hoffman has coauthored two other South-Western/Thomson Learning texts: Essentials of Services Marketing and Managing Services Marketing, both with John E. G. Bateson.

Now a private consultant in the services sector, John E.G. Bateson previously served as Group Chief Executive Officer of SHL Group and was a Senior Vice-President and Practice Leader with Gemini Consulting in the Gemini Group. He has also taught as Associate Professor of Marketing at the London Business School in England, and was a visiting associate professor at the Stanford Business School. Prior to teaching, he was a brand manager with Lever Brothers and a marketing manager with Philips. Dr. Bateson holds an undergraduate degree from Imperial College, London, a master's degree from London Business School, and a Ph. D. in marketing from the Harvard Business School. He has published extensively in the services marketing literature, including in the Journal of Marketing Research, the Journal of Retailing, Marketing Science, and the Journal of Consumer Research. He is also the author of Managing Services marketing: Text and Readings (Dryden) and Marketing Public Transit: A Strategic Approach (Praeger). Dr. Bateson was actively involved with the formation of the services division of the American Marketing Association, where he served on the Services Council for four years and has chaired sessions of the AMA Services Marketing Conference. He also served on the steering committee of the Marketing Science Institute.
