About the Author
Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

Dr. Michael C. Ehrhardt is a Professor in the Finance Department and is the Paul and Beverly Castagna Professor of Investments. He completed his undergraduate work in Civil Engineering at Swarthmore College. After working several years as an engineer, he earned his M.S. in Operations Research and Ph.D. in Finance from the Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Ehrhardt has taught extensively at the undergraduate, masters, and doctoral levels in the areas of investments, corporate finance, and capital markets. He has directed and served on numerous dissertation committees and is a member of the team that developed and delivered the integrative first year of the MBA program. Dr. Ehrhardt teaches in Executive Education Programs and consults in the areas of corporate valuation, value-based compensation plans, financial aspects of supply-chain management, and the cost of capital. He has been awarded the Allen G. Keally Outstanding Teacher Award, the Tennessee Organization of MBA Students Outstanding Faculty member, the College of Business Administration Research & Teaching Award, and the John B. Ross Outstanding Teaching Award in the College of Business. Much of his research focuses on corporate valuation and asset pricing models, including pricing models for interest-rate sensitive instruments. His work has been published in numerous journals, including The Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis, Financial Management, The Financial Review, The Journal of Financial Research, and The Journal of Banking and Finance. He has also authored or co-authored several books addressing various areas of finance.

Top Textbook

This is the best textbook I've ever read. Not just the best financial textbook, but the best textbook. I used Van Horne in my MBA program in 1980. Van Horne made the same mistake that most textbook authors make: he assumes that either the student knows too much or that the teacher will clarify the author. Brigham, et. al., assumes that the student knows very little, which is always the safest assumption. In my opinion, it is impossible for an author to tell too much about a topic or to overexplain a topic. This appears to be Brigham's opinion, too. As a result, he has written a text that aids, rather than frustrates, the student in learning. In addition, it is an interestingly written text. I read well over half of the book in the evenings after work, plus Saturday and Sunday, in just one week. All textbook authors should learn from Eugene Brigham how a text book is to be written. Explain, clarify, use examples, and explain again.

Love The Book's Content (Easy to Understand)

I had to purchase this book for my MBA Fin Mgmt I class last semester. I actually purchased it from the bookstore. I didn't have a finance background. I really liked the way the authors made the subject easy to understand and comprehend. It gives you plenty of examples. The answers and calculations are given for the self-test questions. This class was taken all online. When I initially had taken this class on campus, I had to drop it because I wasn't understanding the concepts. After taking an Accounting course, I felt I was better preprared for this course a second time around. This book is written for the novice and advanced student.

I fully understand how very intelligent people who do not have advance financial training would find this book overly complicated. This is not the sort of book you read in bed -- it is a text book. But it is one the most useful on my shelf. I refer to it constantly.
I'm a former Goldman Sachs investment banker and current CEO of a technology company with a JD/MBA from NYU. This book was required reading for an advanced corporate finance class I took while in school. It is the best finance book I have ever purchased.
This is not a primer. But for those who understand DCF, optimal capital structure, capital leases and working capital management... this is your book.

Great guide for the intellectual beginner

If you are studying theology or some other field where you need to have a good basic command of the history of philosophy, or just want a readable but sophisticated intro, this could be the book for you. It was first published in 1964 with undergraduate philosophy majors as the intended audience, but with the decline of philosophical literacy and the trendiness of contemporary programs, it should be useful for graduate students who are either beginning to study philosophy or have just enough exposure to be confused.

There are about 20 authors including some big names like MacIntyre, Flew and Danto. The general approach is critical more than historical with impressive analytical commentary. The book covers an amazing amount of ground in a relatively short space (about 550 pages of text, but it covers over 20 centuries). To have this kind of overview from the hands of top contemporary philosophers is a real treat.

The only downside is that it doesn't include all the moderns it might -- e.g., only a page or so on Husserl. The editor chose quality over quantity. You can always go elsewhere for the missing philosophers. If that is a possible concern, check the index before buying. No one overview can do it all. This is easily the best one I've seen. I just wish I had found it sooner. I read a chapter in the library today and was delighted to find the book is still available.

excellent book

out of print but still one of the very best history of philosophies available. excellent individual articles both explaining and criticizing the philosophies of Plato, Aristotle, Russell, Hegel, Kant, Schopenhauer, and others. Some articles are more damaging in their criticisms, others are softer on the criticisms. The article on Nietzsche is excellent (Arthur Danto), as is the article on Schopenhauer (Richard Taylor). Interesting article by MacIntyre on all of existentialism. Nothing on any philosophers post 1970 of course.

About the Author
James D. Gwartney holds the Gus A. Stavros Eminent Scholar Chair at Florida State University, where he directs the Stavros Center for the Advancement of Free Enterprise and Economic Education. His writings have been widely published in both professional journals and popular media. He is the co-author of Common Sense Economics: What Everyone Should Know about Wealth and Prosperity (St. Martin's Press, 2005), a primer on economics and personal finance. Gwartney's current research focuses on the measurement and determination of factors that influence cross-country differences in income levels and growth rates. In this regard he is the coauthor (with Robert Lawson) of the annual report, Economic Freedom of the World, which provides information on the institutions and policies of 141 countries. This data set, published by a worldwide network of institutes in 79 countries, is widely used by scholars investigating topics ranging from economic growth to peaceful relations among nations. He served as Chief Economist of the Joint Economic Committee of the U.S. Congress during 1999-2000. Gwartney was invited by the incoming Putin Administration in March 2000 to make presentations and have discussions with leading Russian economists concerning the future of the Russian economy. In 2004 he was the recipient of the Adam Smith Award of the Association of Private Enterprise Education for his contribution to the advancement of free market ideals. He is a past President of the Southern Economic Association and the Association for Private Enterprise Education. Gwartney earned his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Washington.

Richard L. Stroup is Professor of Economics Emeritus at Montana State University, as well as Senior Fellow at the Property and Environment Research Center (PERC) and Visiting Professor in Economics at North Carolina State University. For the three years before his retirement from Montana State University, he served as head of the Department of Agricultural Economics & Economics. Professor Stroup, who has a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Washington, was one of the originators of the New Resource Economics, the academic approach popularly known as free market environmentalism. He also served as director of the Office of Policy Analysis in the U.S. Department of the Interior and has been published widely in professional journals and popular publications. He is author or contributing editor of numerous books on the economics of resources and the environment and the author of ECONOMICS: WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT ECONOMICS AND THE ENVIRONMENT (Cato Institute). Most recently he co-authored COMMON SENSE ECONOMICS: WHAT EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT WEALTH AND PROSPERITY (St. Martin's Press, 2005) with James Gwartney and Dwight Lee. Stroup has lectured throughout the United States and abroad to professional and general audiences. He also is an adjunct scholar with the Cato Institute.

Russell S. Sobel earned his Ph.D. in economics from Florida State University in 1994. He has published more than 150 books and articles, and has received national recognition for his works on entrepreneurship and FEMA reform. He serves on the editorial board for three academic journals, and on the advisory board for four university centers. He has won numerous awards for both his teaching and his research. He regularly teaches courses in both principles of economics and public economics, and gives lectures at economic education outreach programs. He is a Visiting Scholar in Entrepreneurship in the School of Business Administration at The Citadel.

David A. Macpherson is the E.M. Stevens Distinguished Professor of Economics at Trinity University. Previously, he was Director of the Pepper Institute on Aging and Public Policy and the Rod and Hope Brim Eminent Scholar of Economics at Florida State University, where he has received two university-wide awards for teaching excellence. Professor Macpherson is the author of many articles in leading labor economics and industrial relations journals, including the JOURNAL OF LABOR ECONOMICS, JOURNAL OF HUMAN RESOURCES, and INDUSTRIAL AND LABOR RELATIONS REVIEW. He is also coauthor of CONTEMPORARY LABOR ECONOMICS, Ninth Edition, as well as the annual Union Membership and Earnings Data Book: Compilations from the Current Population Survey. His specialty is applied labor economics. His current research interests include pensions, discrimination, labor unions, and the minimum wage. Macpherson received his undergraduate degree and Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University.
