One of the best of its genre

I read this book almost 20 years ago, if I remember correctly, and it's one of the few books which I literally couldn't put down until it was finished. I think I finally turned out the light at about 3AM, even though I had to go to work early the next morning. It is gripping, believable, and well written in every respect. If you like international spy techno-thrillers at all, this is one of the best ever written. PS - the Clint Eastwood movie based on this book was one of Eastwood's most mediocre efforts. If you saw it and were disappointed, don't let that stop you from reading the book. The book is FAR superior!

"Firefox" is the code name for a new breed of Russian fighter, a plane that's invisible to radar, outruns missiles, and wields an arsenal guided by the pilot's thoughts. With nothing remotely capable of matching the super-jet on their drawing boards, British and American spymatsers hit on a seemingly impossible, virtually suicidal plan: send one of their pilots into Russia - into the Russians' high-security flight-test center - to find the super plane, and steal it. Complicating things is Mitchell Gant, the west's designated skyjacker, a burnt out Viet Nam vet who test flew captured Russian planes for the CIA. Scarred within after being shotdown, Gant's plods on, begging to be discovered and put out of his misery.
Like the plan, "Fireox" the novel seems like a no-brainer - Craig Thomas seems unsure of his hold on military technology, and by his prose, you'd never confuse him with other authors who've done the stuff they've written about (like fly planes and get shot at). Instead, Thomas' crisp prose, an almost constant state of tension and an almost supersonic pacing put "Firefox" ahead of just about any other aviation technothriller. Bets of all are the flying scenes. While other writers boast of being able to put the reader inside the cockpit of a high-performance fighter - only Thomas delivers. Unlike other authors, Thomas knows the tension, stark terror and gallons of adrenaline that a fighter pilot can be expected to go through while trapped in a dogfight. Then there's Thomas' hero - Gant. Thomas' conceit is that Gant's superiors were so ready to see there case fail, that they chose the one man least capable of pulling it off. Gant is unlike any technothriller writer you've ever read about - he begins the novel trapped in a chronic nervous breakdown. Yet he excels over the cardboard charachters of other books who just push buttons and read computer screens. Those charachters just register information - Gant actually experiences it as real people would. With the exception of "Flight ofthe Intruder", and Thomas' other Mitchell Gant novels, this is probably the best air-war thriller you'll read. Sequels included "Firefox Down", "Winterhawk" and "A Different War" - "Winterhawk" being my favorite story, but never outrunning the flying scenes of "Firefox".

Mitchell Gant's Romp Through Russia

This is the second novel by Craig Thomas, and the one that he's gotten the most fame from. Thomas gives this book a bigger scale than his first novel, Rat Trap, and his novels would get more epic as they went along.

Set during the cold war, the story invloves a newly-made Russian jet, the MiG-31, codename: Firefox. It has stealth technology, can go speeds up to Mach 5, and has a thought-controlled weapons system. The West knows what a threat this can be, so what do they do? Smuggle the best pilot they can find into the Soviet Union so he can steal it. USAF pilot Mitchell Gant is chosen, dispite his shell-shock from his time as a POW in Vietnam. With the help of Jewish dissidents, Gant must make his way through Russia and hijack the super-plane right under the noses of the Soviets. Throughout the journey Thomas takes us through Gant's unstable psyche.

A great novel from Craig Thomas, but I got a little bit bored with some of the flying scenes. I'm more of a cloak and dagger fan than of high tech stuff, but that's not to say that those parts of the book aren't written well; they are, and Thomas does a great job at not hitting you over the head with his research. And even with the techno stuff he can really put you into the heads of his characters which makes for high tension reading.

Firefox was the only Craig Thomas novel to be adapted into a movie. Clint Eastwood's version, released in 1982, made for a faithful adaptation of the book. Though the special effects of the time are horribly dated by today's standards, Eastwood brought all the suspense of the first half of the book to the screen masterfully. And if it weren't for the film, I wouldn't of ever heard of Craig Thomas and be able to enjoy all of his books.

Craig Thomas also cast Mitchell Gant in three more novels: Firefox Down, Winter Hawk, and A Different War.

Great for men but is still good about darkness of adolescent

I read the book, "A Seperate Peace", by John Knowles and it was pretty good. It involves two main boys going through high school during World War II. One of the boys,Phineas, is superior at everything involving sports. The other main character is Gene Forrester. He is great at school but not in sports. These boys are roomed together in their prepatory school named Devon and are best friends. Gene starts thinking that Phineas, a.k.a Finny, is trying to hold back him from doing so great at school so he can be the best at everything. So Gene starts hating Finny and ends up creating a horrible accident that ruins Finny's life forever. It shows that there is always some darkness in the back of Gene's mind but never once was there in Finny's. Gene goes to tell Phineas that he created the accident but Finny doesn't belive him. So Gene drops it and hopes Finny won't try to remember what actually happened that one day and remember the truth. Another character in the book is a boy named Leper Lelliper who is always looking to find the best things in life he can look at slowly and not rush anything. He decides to go look at and take pictures of a beaver dam then go and work on the railroads to help the WWII fighters get through the town. But in his childish life he becomes to be the first person in his and Gene's and Finny's class to enlist in the army. After doing this everybody's life takes a turn. Brinker Hadley, the class president, drops out of all extra curricular activites and becomes lazy. Gene starts working at sports and pitys Finny every chance he can. Phineas starts trying to get his life back in order and trys to do all the things he did before the accident. But then one day Gene recieves a letter from Leper asking for help. The army has done something to Leper and tooken something away from him he can never get back. Gene goes to visit him but can't take it and goes back to Devon, never speaking of what happened. Then one night Brinker Hadley and a bunch of other boys awaken Finny and Gene to take them to a trail. A trial that would change Finny's life and Gene's life forever. The whole story is told by Gene Forrester in a flashback fifteen years ago. The story shows great symbolism with tree. And always has great themes, such as:private war versus public war, Gene's view of life vs. Finny's view of life, and a life of conformity vs. a life of freedom.

This most complete study to date of American press reactions to the Holocaust sets forth in abundant detail how the press nationwide played down or even ignored reports of Jewish persecutions over a 12-year period. The conclusions amplify but do not seriously challenge previous studies; what is more significant here is the effortfar from completeto explain press actions. While revealing more about major newspapers and correspondents than about the mass of smaller ones, and saying far too little about newsreels and American Jewish newspapers, this raises larger questions concerning the relationship between press coverage, public knowledge, and government policy that deserve serious consideration. A prodigiously researched indictment of indifference

This is a very good read. The book tells the story as to how the press in the USA covered the Holocaust. In doing so it explodes a lot of myths concerning the alleged lack of knowledge about what was happening to the Jews. Newspaper after newspaper from The New York Times on down had articles about the persecutions and murders. Yet they were never emphasized properly and were often relegated to the back pages. Rarely did they ever make the front pages. It was almost as if the nation preferred not to know. Many factors contributed to this; anit-Semitism, isolationism, American skepticism. The American government also contributed to down playing the news. The three most prominent villains in this were: Assistant Secretary of State Breckinridge Long ( anativist), Assistant Secrteary of War John J. McCloy (who said that if the USA bombed Auschwitz the nazis would be "even more vindictive") and Congressman Sol F. Bloom who headed the House Foreign Affairs Committee (and was referred to by Stephen Wise as "the State Departments House Jew"). There were reporters who did their jobs well who constantly emphasized that anti-Semitism was a "raison d'etre" of National Socialism however they were in the minority. This book along with David S. Wyman's "The Abandonment of the Jews" are the two best books on the subject. William D. Rubinstein's "The Myth of Rescue" is a poorly written book that contradicts itself over and over again and is a book for peopel who think that FDR could do no wrong.

Hypocricy Revealed

This book should be required reading for all jounalism college majors who intend to "tell the whole truth." If the present doesn't reveal the truth then history will.

Ms. Lipstadt did an incredible job of researching and tying together huge numbers of old newspaper articles and putting them together to tell the whole story chonologically and coherently. She showed the hypocricy of the press in calling for "something" to be done (after they could no longer deny atrocities were happening) then fomenting opposition to allowing anymore refugees into this country. They could have cited, "there are almost half a million immigration visas available, bring them in."

She also shows the hypocricy of the British press who also called for "something" to be done, then when the war was over and surviving Jews were trying to get into British Mandate Palestine, there was no cry from the press, "We didn't do anything then, but now we should not hinder them in immigrating to their homeland." Of all nations, the Brits are the most culpable because they had control over The Land, and instead of allowing walking miracles to start new lives, they hindered them with all their might,preventing surviving Jews from coming in before and during the war, then sending them to Cyprus after the war; shooting them down as they tried to swim ashore after their ships had been fired upon sunk, and the French sent those survivors on "The Exodus," back to camps in Germany. With every cell in my body I want to cry out, "How could you??"

great book, bad shape

Book was offered as like new, but the actual item is far from picture & description: musty smell & pages slightly corrugated (stored in damp cellar ?), large brown stain at the bottom of the last three dozen pages, some of which are stuck together & tear when separated. Seller initially forgot to include dust jacket, sent it at no cost when I asked for it (which was nice !), but folded, resulting in fat creases right through the middle of the cover & back. Many tears, some taped - very disappointing, all in all. Binding is tight & corners ok, though, so two stars for that.

As for the book itself: a 'Peanuts' fans dream come true; a thorough 'Best Of' with full cooperation from Sparky in his prime (sundays up to 1975, mostly seventies & some nice biographical material - which, of course, is even more beautifully celebrated by Chip Kidd in his two books) at the size of an 'artist's edition'.

Mylar wrap has brought back a little shine to this scruffy wet dog but even so I'll probably go search for a better copy when I can afford it ..

Hard back book, with dust jacket, published by Holt,Rinehart and Winston, NY. size 11 1/2" X 15 1/2", 222 pages. Chapter One: "And So 25 Years Have Gone By" This chapter has photo's of Schulz as a baby, early family photos, army life photos & sketches. Comic strips from a Catholic magazine called "Just Keep Looking" and "Little Folks" by Sparky. Also 1st peanut strip dated 12/2/50. And much more. Chapter Two: "The Initial Theme of Peanuts" This chapter mostly has the comic strip plates number 52-106 called "Peanuts featuring", "Good ol' Charlie Brown", from 1/18/73 to 12/16/73 Chapter Three: "Surroundings Play a Definite Role", Consists of exterior and interior photos of Schulz studio called "Snoopy Place". Photos of Schulz at work and sketching with colleagues. Also more comic strip plates numbered 107-134 dated from 1/13/74 to 3/2/75. Has a Peanuts Chronology and a Peanuts Bibliography A great addition to any PEANUTS fan!

The best Peanuts introduction; but the hardcover edition is huge

My brothers and I had this when we were growing up, and I bought it for my kids to introduce them to the Peanuts gang. This is the best book for that purpose. Charles Schulz describes what his childhood was like, and there are photos of some of the artwork he drew for school homework. It shows the very first Peanuts strips, so you can see how his drawings of the characters evolved. My girls, age 8 and 5, read this over and over again almost every night.

Please note, though, that the hardcover version is HUGE--15 inches wide by 12 inches tall, it doesn't fit in a typical bookshelf. The paperback version, which is the one we had as kids, is just 11 inches wide by 8 inches tall.
