About the Author
Victoria Fromkin received her bachelor's degree in economics from the University of California, Berkeley, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in linguistics from the University of California, Los Angeles. She was a member of the faculty of the UCLA Department of Linguistics from 1966 until her death, and served as its chair from 1972 to 1976. From 1979 to 1989 she served as the UCLA Graduate Dean and Vice Chancellor of Graduate Programs. She was a visiting professor at the universities of Stockholm, Cambridge, and Oxford. Professor Fromkin served as president of the Linguistics Society of America in 1985, president of the Association of Graduate Schools in 1988, and chair of the Board of Governors of the Academy of Aphasia. She received the UCLA Distinguished Teaching Award and the Professional Achievement Award, and served as the U.S. Delegate and a member of the Executive Committee of the International Permanent Committee of Linguistics (CIPL). She was an elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the New York Academy of Science, the American Psychological Society, and the Acoustical Society of America, and in 1996 was elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. She published more than one hundred books, monographs, and papers on topics concerned with phonetics, phonology, tone languages, African languages, speech errors, processing models, aphasia, and the brain/mind/language interface--all research areas in which she worked. Professor Fromkin passed away in 2000, at the age of 76.

A must-read, especially for any professional communicator.

20 years ago, I was toying with the idea of taking the linguistics option as part of my English degree at Oxford University. My course tutor recommended I read Fromkin & Rodman to "see if the subject suited me". F & R hooked me completely: All the major areas are covered, simply presented and introduced by a cleverly chosen cartoon which helps to breaks the ice.
I must have recommended the book to more than 100 people since then and am ordering another copy now because a [former!] friend lost my (heavily thumbed and annotated) original. I now lecture on communications-related subjects and still find myself referring regularly to this seminal work. A must for any serious student of communications science; it draws you gently into a complicated subject and makes the process highly enjoyable.

Great book for introductionary purposes

At the university I attend we have uses this book in an introduction course for linguistics. It is rather good for in introductionary purposes but it does not go in great depth with the subjects. Use it to figure out whether linguistics is something for you, but if you already are interested in linguistics this book will be to shallow.

If you're looking for a college-level textbook - look elsewhere! As the 1-star reviews make clear, this is not aimed at you, despite the upmarket cover...

On the other hand, if you're looking for a 'Linguistics for Dummies' book without the gaudy yellow-and-black cover to give you away, this book should do the trick nicely :) It's a pleasant stroll through the main areas of linguistics, livened up with cartoons - just enough to give you a taste of the subject without bogging you down in erudition. I don't know enough about linguistics to comment on the criticisms of some readers (though rejecting an entire field of study on the basis of one book seems a little...childish to me!), but any book that can turn a dry academic subject into an entertaining read gets my vote.

Her patients include an eight-year-old whose mother is dying of leukemia; the aggressive son of substance abusers; a boy who was molested by a relative; a depressed girl caught up in her mother's divorce proceedings; a hyperactive preschooler; and the bed-wetting daughter of a perfectionist mother. With each child Singer employs a variety of techniques, from traditional use of toys and games to guided visualizations to behavior modification. Her clinical skills are impressive, but her rare combination of perceptiveness, empathy and humility sets her book apart. Singer conveys her clients' distress with appreciation for their courage; she also communicates her own distress in dealing with parents who, unintentionally or not, compound their children's problems. Her awareness of the special difficulties associated with treating children--who, of course, do not schedule their own appointments, or control their environments--heightens the significance of the progress she reports.

Singer, a developmental and clinical psychologist, draws stories from her own practice of therapy with children whose problems range from the death of a parent to sexual abuse. Play therapy involves the use of toys, art, games, and dramatic play to help children work through their problems in a safe, nonjudgmental setting. The therapist also works with parents to change the patterns that caused the children's problems in the first place. Singer's five cases are both touching and unsettling. The quite remarkable changes in the children's behavior brought about by play therapy elucidate the role of play in children's lives. Singer writes well, and her cases cover a wide enough spectrum of problems to inform the reader about the broad applications of play therapy. Recommended for public libraries.

Transmission Lines

This book contains everything you need to know about transmission lines, waveguides and smith charts.
In my opinion this book has a very complete description about transmission lines. Most books treat transmission lines as one chapter. This is not enough for a telecom course on transmission lines.

About the Author
Gilbert Strang is Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College. He was an undergraduate at MIT and a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford. His doctorate was from UCLA and since then he has taught at MIT. He has been a Sloan Fellow and a Fairchild Scholar and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Professor Strang has published a monograph with George Fix, "An Analysis of the Finite Element Method", and has authored six widely used textbooks. He served as President of SIAM during 1999 and 2000 and he is Chair of the U.S. National Committee on Mathematics for 2003-2004.

99% Identical to the 5th Edition. But you'll need to get HW problems from a friend.

Pretty solid textbook. I got this for a linear algebra course in college. Although it is a version behind, it was nearly identical to the 5th edition. Of course the chapter problems are updated with different numbers but the structure of each problem was idential 99% of the time. This was great for practicing problems that my teacher assigned from the newer edition.

I'd recommend getting this book over the 5th edition, borrowing a friends book to get the chapter problems, and save a TON of money.

Also, if you look around you can find the solutions manual for this textbook that shows in depth solutions to problems.

A solid explanation of linear algebra

First off, this book is not well-suited for students who have never seen a matrix and have not yet mastered the basic calculations of how to multiply and add matrices, or for those who have never seen Gaussian elimination. There are many other textbooks that do nothing but provide you with exercise after exercise of manual computations of inverses and determinants that are better suited to that purpose.

That said, for anyone taking a course in linear algebra who actually wants to know more than the rote mechanics of matrix multiplication and Gaussian elimination, this book provides a succint explanation of what matrices actually represent. And I've held onto the book as a reference now for many years (referring to the 3rd edition).

I came across it as a graduate student studying for doctoral qualifying examinations. Someone suggested that I check out Strang's book from the library as a supplement to my utterly confounding graduate school text. It was a godsend! I pored over Strang's book, doing computations on occasion, and taking copious notes of his thorough explanations of concepts like null space, row space, column space, and eigenvalues. After that, I had no problem passing my qualifying exam in linear algebra!

The best for self-study

Linear Algebra is not an easy topic, in especially because many concepts are not intuitive. So I struggled a lot to master some abstract concepts like Linear Transformation, Vector Space and Subspaces. As far I'm concerned, David Lay's book is the only one that explains these concepts with clear and didactic figures. For example, I was able to understand what really a Kernel was and a Range only after had reading the text and figure 2 at page 204 of the fourth edition. In my opinion is the best book for self-study to undergraduate and first-year graduate students.Linear Algebra and Its Applications (4th Edition)
