Trust me on this one

Out of the sheer horror that someone recommended this book over Baugh and Cable's A History of the English Language and several other wonderful histories available, I find myself writing my first review. I was unlucky enough to have this book as an undergrad a number of years ago, and along with a general dislike of it that I've always carried, I specifically remember that the exercises were impenetrable. Now that I am getting a PhD in the history of the English language, I can safely say that I am achieving this goal despite this book. It is adequate in some ways but nowhere near as good as some of the other options. The only real bonus I can see is that the price is good.

Origins of the English Language

Joseph Williams's Origins of the English Language: A Social & Linguistic History accurately highlights the history of the English language from the evolution of man clear through to Modern English that we speak today, providing enough knowledge for anyone to completely understand the origin of English. Intended for use as a textbook in college-level English history classes, Williams style is one that is conservative yet informative when he touches on many of the major aspects of the evolution of English, backing each up with references that make for a quite impressive bibliography with over 200 references. By reinforcing the facts that he mentions, Williams's style is one that is hard to misinterpret yet very informational and easy to follow. Some of this may be due, in part, to the assistance that Williams received from various university professors while writing this piece. Although at times Williams repeats his theories and arguments, he warns of this in his preface so that the reader is aware that this repetition is only to emphasize major points. Overall, I feel that this book is one of the most indepth yet comprehensible books on the history of the English language.

More Like an Elementary Text Than "A Social and Liguistic History"

Out of date (1986) and unmpressive to begin with. It tries to cover too much (the second part of the book is about grammar and pronounciation), has too many long word lists and reads like an elementary introductory text -- lots of questions to the reader. Much less in on what is promised in the subtitle (a social and linguistic history) than I hoped: for example, the issue of what happened to Celtic is barely mentioned.

Excellent --I mean outstanding in every way.

I have two unrelated degrees, and had only high school biology. I use this book for self-study. It is perfect. Its long list of reviewers gave me confidence in its lessons.

I find it plain and understandable. The explanations and definitions could not be made simpler. Superbly illustrated, the book also makes good use of boldface type and color. When a new term is introduced, its pronunciation is given right there, and selected useful etymologies are given in the margins.

It begins with an overview of biology and the basics of scientific method, experimentation, what a hypothesis is, inference and theories, microscopy, etcetera. Then there is a GREAT review of basic chemistry, and the book logically progresses into biochemistry, cell theory, reproduction, and on "up." There are no gaps; everything is built on what came before.

It is concise yet interesting because it cites quick examples. For example, the section on vacuoles explains how these intracellular toxic waste containers can be beneficial to the plant: "For instance, the poisons that certain acacia trees have in their vacuoles provide a defense against plant-eating animals." No chapter is without such examples that cite particular organisms to make a point. Where warranted, there is longer, intelligent discussion of organisms that don't clearly fall on one side of the fence. For example, there is a paragraph on how Volvox (a green algae) exhibits properties of both unicellular and multicellular organisms.

There are interesting ecology sidebars on topics such as rain forests, global warming, and acid rain. Ecology is also not forgotten in the main text.

The questions at the end of each chapter are also well thought out: There are sections of straightforward multiple choice, short answer, and vocabulary questions. Then there is a "Test Your Thinking" section with clever, fun questions that require one to reflect on the material rather than just regurgitate answers from rote; these questions often involve material from previous chapters, but are never vague nor require knowledge of something that was not presented before.

It is complete. All 1100 pages considered, I am honestly at a loss for anything unfavorable to say. Too much to list here. It is so well done that I was dumbfounded to see any negative remarks at all!

Frustration

This book is not organized logically and provides an inappropriate level of detail in some areas while offering only very basic information in others. As a novice teacher, I find it frustrating. The section and chapter review questions are also too ambiguous. Students have a hard time determining what exactly questions are asking. I am frustrated by this book. It doesn't work for me or my ninth grade students. I give it two stars because I DO like the writing excercises and "Biology in Progress" sections.

Top of the line in Biology.

This book is amazing. You will know all you need to know of life and beyond with this amazing book. It goes through cells, to genetics, to anatomy, animals, bacteria, disections, maps of organisms such as the human body, animals bodies and etc. This book is top of the line and couldn't get any better. I highly recommend this book to anyone wanting to know anything about biology, or "the study of life". Ha, see what I already learned.

Thorough Coverage of Every Facet of International Marketing

This textbook is organized into three major sections:
Part One: The International Environment - includes chapters on the concept of global marketing, the world economy, foreign economies, the people of the world and the political-legal environment.
Part Two: International Marketing Management - includes chapters on global marketing strategy, international marketing intelligence, product policy, new product development, foreign market entry, foreign market channels and global logistics, promotion and advertising, pricing, and marketing of services.
Part Three: Coordinating International Marketing - includes chapters on planning, organizing and control of international marketing, information technology and the future of international marketing.
The text is liberally sprinkled with interesting and relevant illustrations, case studies and examples. As either a textbook or reference source, it is an excellent up-to-date overview on every aspect of international marketing.
My only criticism is that the page after page of dense text could have been enlivened considerably with the use of color graphics and illustrations.

As a Georgetown University student who took the author's class, I found this textbook to be the most comprehenisve International Marketing source around. I currently own two textbooks written by the same authors because of the book's clear, organized topics. This textbook is perfect for beginners who would like to learn more about International Marketing as a guide for professionals who have to make challenging decisions.

Great to learn with

We use this book in my Algebra class. The examples are great for a quick check of how to solve problems. Their are answers to selected problems in the back to check your work and it includes a glossary of mathmatical terms which have come in handy. Each chapter contains sections to help you learn at a pace where you aren't overwhelmed by learning a whole concept all at once. Each section has problems to solve that we use as our homework assignments. At the end of each chapter there are chapter reviews, quizes and tests to make sure you can do the problems before moving on. Holt also has a website with videos that show you step by step demonstrations. I enjoy using this book and reccomend using it to learn Algebra 1.

A good help for homeschooling parents

This book not only provides the answers to the student textbook, it does a good job of explaining how the answers are reached. And I really appreciate the online help provided by Holt as well. It is worth every cent to have the Teacher's edition along with the regular text unless you excel at math.

A Grim Doorstop

Three years ago, I had the grim experience of examining this grim doorstop. I would like to point out that the co-authors Leinwand, Seymour and Waits are three stalwarts of the "math reform" rubbish that has been promoted since 1989. I was told that students in this particular class did not actually use the book. They simply kept it at home for "reference." The teacher distributed photocopies of handouts that come with the doorstop. The fact that these abominable doorstops are being written, published, promoted, and adopted is indicative of the incompetent people who have overrun the education business in the U.S.--and who are primarily responsible for the continuing pseudo-education of American students. To get an idea of how our textbooks have degenerated, compare the above with William G. Shute et al, "Elementary Algebra," American Book Co. (1956) 482 pages. [The 1965 Enlarged Edition, which evidently responded to "market forces," is identical except for some axioms and set theory added at the end of the book.]

Solid entry in a very charming series

In this edition of the Sweet Pickles series, we see a day in the life of Goof-Off Goose, who is bound and determined to take it easy today. She tells herself and everyone else that she will do a variety of productive tasks tomorrow, including fixing her broken television, mopping up some melted ice cream from the floor, and helping Elephant with his laundry. In the end, she follows a delicious smell to a party, which she wasn't invited to because she was taking it easy today. She concludes that she can attend the party, and take it easy tomorrow instead.

These books are fun, with vivid bright colors that make each page seem shiny and new. I think children might feel a little sorry for Goose, who seems unable to do anything, and whose house is basically a pigsty. But mostly they will like to see the different animals who exhibit different traits interacting with each other.

There's a cautionary lesson about procrastination in the book, and we can all see the consequences of letting the Goof-Off Goose inside run the show.

The Sweet Pickles series as a whole was a big hit in my childhood home, and children will be eager to get more books in the collection. One of the best things about the series are the inside covers; the inside front cover has a picture of all 26 animals and their names, with each animal saying or doing something that displays their behavior. The inside back cover has a diagram of the Sweet Pickles town that lists which buildings are occupied by which characters. It's a touch that really makes the community come to life, and children will see a strong connection between the books.

Goose Goofs Off

The book " Goose Goofs Off " is not the best book I've read, but it was still a good book. This book could be taken in a couple of different ways itself. This book was about a Goose who puts everything off and doesn't do anything. For example she spilled ice cream all over her kitchen floor. Instead of cleaning it she says " I'll do it tomorrow ." Like I was saying, you can look at this in two ways. You could read this and it could tell you that it is ok to be lazy and to not do anything around the house and stuff. Or you could look at it as this book teaches you that if you don't do anything and put it all off, that you will never get anything accomplished. Putting things off, till the last minute isn't the way to do things. It is best do things right away to get them out of the way instead of worrying about everything all at once later.

Sweet Pickles Book Series

I grew up on this series of books. I ABSOLUTELY LOVED THEM! I learned how to read with them! I am extremely upset that my mother didn't save them. I want to recollect the whole series so I can share them with my children. Sweet Pickles, along with the Berenstein Bears, Fraggle Rock, and the Encyclopedia children's show (all from the 80s) are all things I plan on finding to share with my children and their children and so on.
