Maximizing shareholder value
By Leo E. Walsh
I used this book for a 500-level MBA finance class, and I have to admit I liked it. The first 3/4's of the book drive home the financial manager's objective: Maximizing shareholder value. It does this consistently, and actually got me (A Sales Manager) to understand why profit needs to take a back seat to value.

Like all introductory texts, it skimps a little on complexity. However, I truly have an appreciation now for finance. Many decisions my company makes now make sense. Though I have little need to apply financial concepts in my current job, I can give better `business reason' explanations to my reports when they ask. Which is why I began pursuing an MBA in the first place.

Enough to avoid Finance mistakes
By A Customer
This new edition of the classical title looks very informative and meaningful. Perhaps a little bit more strong in the mathematical treatment will provide the customers with a text more atractive. Anyhow, it is still a good text for beginners.
Dr. Guillermo E. Martinez.

About the Author
David W. Oxtoby became the ninth president of Pomona College on July 1, 2003. An internationally noted chemist, he previously served as dean of physical sciences at the University of Chicago. At Pomona, he holds a coterminous appointment as president and professor of chemistry. Before coming to Pomona, he was associated with the University of Chicago for nearly three decades, with brief interludes to serve as a visiting professor at such places as the University of Paris; the University of Bristol in Great Britain; and the University of Sydney in Australia. Oxtoby is a fellow of the American Physical Society and a member of the American Chemical Society and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. After earning his bachelor's degree, summa cum laude, from Harvard University, he went on to earn his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley. As a research chemist, he is author or co-author of more than 165 scientific articles on such subjects as light scattering, chemical reaction dynamics and phase transitions. In addition to co-authoring Principles of Modern Chemistry and Chemistry: Science of Change, he has received fellowships from the Guggenheim, von Humboldt, Dreyfus, Sloan, Danforth and National Science foundations.

H.P. Gillis conducts experimental research in the physical chemistry of electronic materials, emphasizing phenomena at solid surfaces and interfaces. Dr. Gillis received his B.S. (Chemistry and Physics) at Louisiana State University and his Ph.D. (Chemical Physics) at The University of Chicago. After postdoctoral research at the University of California-Los Angeles and 10 years with the technical staff at Hughes Research Laboratories in Malibu, California, Dr. Gillis joined the faculty of Georgia Institute of Technology. Dr. Gillis moved to University of California-Los Angeles, where he currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Materials Science and Engineering. a slightly different take on general chemistry
By Athena_Wiles
This book is not as approachable as many general chemistry books; as a previous reviewer has noted, this book is written by physical chemists and the organization and presentation of the concepts in the text reflects this. As a physical chemist, I generally like this text; however, I acknowledge that it's not for everyone and I do have a few critiques.

Students who are not mathematically-inclined will have a hard time with this text: the thermodynamics section, the derivation of the kinetic theory of gases, and some of the derivations of the quantum mechanics material are intimidating! However, students with a firm grounding in math and physics will get much more out of this text than they will out of other standard general chemistry texts like Brown and LeMay (Chemistry The Central Science Tenth Edition).

I would strongly recommend this book for students who have an interest in math and physics or who have already taken an introductory chemistry course and want to understand the phenomena described at a more detailed level. For AP Chemistry or for students who haven't taken intro physics or intro calculus, I would instead recommend the Brown and LeMay book. I feel that its coverage of some of the topics is a bit more superficial, but it is more approachable for students taking chemistry for the first time.

One last note: I dislike the newest edition of this book because they authors reorganized the chapters into a "quantum first" presentation (quantum mechanics is introduced in chapter 4 rather than chapter 15 as it was in the 5th edition). While this organization is suitable for some full-out physical chemistry courses, it is not appropriate for this book. If this book is to be used as a general chemistry book, consider doing the chapters out of order: start with the history of chemistry chapters, skip to the thermo stuff, and come back to quantum later. It's much easier to grasp intuitively if you work from the macro to the micro and not the other way around.

Chemistry for serious learners
By Alan Meyer
I started the Fifth edition of this book a couple of years ago. I had found a copy of it and of the workbook for it, in a used bookstore and got them cheap. I finished about 300 pages, then let it slide and gave up. I thought, "this is too much math for me. I just want to learn the concepts." I read a couple of easy chemistry texts that were closer to high school level than college, then tried the Brown and LeMay (also bought used and cheap.)

Brown and LeMay have created a very well constructed, tightly honed book that is permeated with understanding of what college students are likely to find difficult. It's an excellent text and maybe a better college textbook than this one, but in the final analysis, I liked the Oxtoby better. I liked the physical chemistry orientation, chemistry is after all about real, physical stuff. I liked the clear appreciation of the achievements of the great chemists who have gone before us, and the history behind our growing understanding. I liked that it's a straight up attempt by some very deep thinkers about chemistry to communicate their understanding of the subject. I liked that it doesn't spoon feed the reader. It tries very hard to build up everything from first principles, but it doesn't cut out the hard stuff to spare the student. I'm inclined to say that it treats the student with considerably more respect than Brown and LeMay do.

I'm not a young man. I'm many decades past college and am studying chemistry purely for my own interest. I have read a fair amount of molecular biology and some biochemistry and I now feel the need for a deeper understanding of the underlying chemistry. For me, looking at this book is a little like standing at the base of a mountain, trying to get up the courage, the will power, and the commitment for the climb. But I just may make another try at it. I'm convinced that the view from the top will be grand.

If I make it to the top I'll write again.

Great chemistry textbook for college freshmen
By HolyMasamune
Though many people would find this book distasteful, it is an extremely good source of information for both basic and intermediate chemistry. It is obviously not a book any student can handle, but with a good background in basic chemistry, the book will take the student a long way down the path of chemistry. The book uses colorful pictures and graphs to show the reader what the chemistry looks like in real life rather than just teaching the bare concept.

Chemistry is not about doing word problems; it is about actually seeing the results and learning to analyze these results. If you prefer to just get through chemistry and "learn" how to do problems without learning the real applications, choose another book. If you actually want to learn chemistry, this is the perfect book for you. As opposed to the average textbook that drags a subject matter on, this book is very concise and moves on after showing a derivation of an equation or one sample problem. Obviously this book may seem hard and seemingly impossible to comprehend at times, but a good recommendation is to get enough sleep before reading the book because it is much denser than other introduction to chemistry textbooks.

Very Disappointing Text
By C. Davis
This book was assigned for my under-grad mammalogy class, and I (as well as most of the students in the class) was sorely disappointed in the content of the book. This book attempts to cover both general mammalian characteristics and detailed descriptions of each mammalian family, but it fails to do an adequate job on either subject. The general characteristics are too broad, with very little specifics about any one system, and the chapters on specific families cover only the most general aspects. Not recommended.

A Major and Neglected Classic
By Herbert Gintis
This is Parsons' first book, and arguably his greatest. Parsons began thinking about the relationship between sociology and economic in about 1930, and he wrote a few papers on the topic in the Quarterly Journal of Economics in the early 1930's. He was an instructor in the Harvard economics department at the time, but he recoiled at the mathematical turn economics was taking (Samuelson et al), and he did not like the only plausible alternatives, Marxism (Parsons was a mildly left-liberal throughout his life), and Institutionalism (Parsons believed that understanding society required a dialog between theory and evidence, whereas the Institutionalists rejected the idea of theory in favor of a compilation and recitation of the facts---a position Parsons refers to as "positivism," although the term is widely used in that period to cover a variety of purported sins).

This book has a long, discursive, and painful section on scientific methodology, the purpose of which is to reject institutional economics (which he was taught by the masters) on the grounds of what Alfred North Whitehead terms "the fallacy of misplaced concreteness." The institutionalists critiqued the abstract methods of the Marshallian and Edgeworthian traditions in favor of detailed description of institutional diversity. Parsons will have none of it. His critique of economic theory is that it cannot solve the problem of order and it has no room for normative elements. His own theory of action, of course, does not suffer from misplaced concreteness.

Parsons participated in the early stages of the formation of Sociology as a discipline, and his preoccupation in writing The Structure of Social Action (SSA) was how to retain the theoretical orientation of economic theory, but carve out an area of "non-economics," where Sociology could live in harmony with Economics. His solution in SSA was (a) to broaden the rational actor model to the "theory of action," which retained the centrality of choice under conditions of constraint, but broadened the concept of choice to deal with normative and ethical concerns; and (b) to suggest that the "utilitarian" rational actor model could not "solve the problem of order" in society, because it embodies no principles leading rational individuals to share enough values and expectations to cooperate effectively and with sufficient harmony to allow society to persist. Parsons called his alternative "voluntarist," in contrast to "utilitarian," although I have not come to understand why he uses this term.

Parsons' theory of action is in sharp contrast to the suppression of individual rationality in Institutionalism, and the reductivist conception of choice in the behaviorist psychology of the day (Skinner being Harvard's eminent representative). Sociology was to supply the theory behind important social parameters that economic theory just assumes as given. For instance, economic theory assumes a supply of labor dependent upon individual preferences for income over leisure, and for some types of employment over others. Where do these preferences come from? The first step in answering this is to turn to the great economist, Alfred Marshall, who dealt insightfully with the relationship between values and markets. Parsons uses Marshall in SSA to show that economic theory is compatible with a serious analysis of social norms and personal ethics.

However, Parsons turns to Weber for a systematic treatment of culture and economic theory. Following Weber's analysis of the role of Protestantism in the growth of capitalism, Parsons argues that these preferences come from a cultural system that had emerged in England that was appropriately geared towards hard work and material reward (as a symbol of proximity to God and salvation). Many studies since SSA attest to the fact that values underpin labor productivity (see, for instance, Herbert Gintis, "The Nature of the Labor Exchange and the Theory of Capitalist Production", Review of Radical Political Economics 8,2 (1976):36--54; George A. Akerlof, "Labor Contracts as Partial Gift Exchange", Quarterly Journal of Economics 97,4 (1982): 543--569; and Ernst Fehr and Simon Gaechter, "Cooperation and Punishment", American Economic Review 90,4 (2000): 980-994). Similarly, the taste for entrepreneurship on which growth and innovation depend derived from Weber's Protestant Ethic.

Parsons also was deeply impressed with the stress laid by Emile Durkheim on the "conscience collective"---a communality of beliefs among all members of society, even under circumstances of an organic division of labor that threatens social upheaval through extensive class differences. In SSA, Parsons stresses that modern economic theory takes class harmony for granted (there are not classes, only persons in orthodox economics), but in fact, when there is class harmony, this is the product of specific social institutions and practices.

Parsons has two personal characteristics that limited his ability to turn his two insights into a successful paradigm on which sociological theory might rest. One was his limited writing skills. Parsons is almost always verbose, prolix, and imprecise. Perhaps he inherited his approach to writing from the Continental (especially German) writers, for whom lucidity is a sign of superficiality. The other was is lack of mathematical sophistication. When Parsons uses algebra (as he does at one point in SSA), it is painful and grotesque. Together, these weaknesses prevented Parsons from using the theory of action analytically to forge a general theory of action from which economic and sociological aspects would fall out naturally. Parsons, so to speak, knew how to talk the talk, but he never figured out how to walk the walk.

Parsons was also handicapped by the fact that game theory had not been invented when SSA was published, and the economics of Marshall was being replaced by that of Samuelson and Walras. These models assume complete, costless contracting, so it is difficult to see where room for values and norms might fit in. When Parsons and Smelser wrote Economy and Society, a second attempt at integrating sociology and economics, this time based on Parsons' structural-functional AGIL system, game theory had been invented but was in the doldrums (1956), and it was the high point of enthusiasm for the Walrasian general equilibrium model. Not surprisingly, this effort was widely rejected by economists and sociologists alike.

The game-theory revolution in economics and biology, which began in the 1980's has been much more fertile ground for Parsons' ideas. Ironically, by this time Parsons' was virtually discredited in sociology, along with the rational actor model, the theory of action, and even game theory. Contemporary sociological theories today generally roundly criticize economic theory, and have become almost impervious to new ideas. This is a pity because what they peddle as social theory is descriptive and interesting at best, and drivel most of the time.

I believe behavioral game theory, which started with the ultimatum game experiment of Gueth et al.) in 1982, provides ample evidence that Parsons' general approach was correct. In particular, we have found that individual preferences are not irrational, but neither are they purely selfish. Rather individuals incorporate ethical values in their preferences, and trade off among various normative and self-regarding goals. Moreover, we have found that under conditions of incomplete contract, character virtues such as honesty and integrity, as well as other-regarding preference, lead real-life individuals to enjoy far more cooperation, and higher payoffs, that are possible using standard principal-agent models (for a summary, see Ernst Fehr and Herbert Gintis, "Human Motivation and Social Cooperation: Experimental and Analytical Foundations", Annual Review of Sociology 33 (2007): 43-64).

It is curious as to why Parsons did not see immediately that the rational actor model could be expanded into a (proto) theory of action by (a) enriching the model's treatment of "beliefs;" and (b) by introducing other-regarding objectives and character virtues into the individual preference function. I think (a) was not open to Parsons because economic theory at the time only used a truncated form of the rational actor model in which preferences are defined directly over choice sets. With the advent of game theory, economics shifted to an enriched notion in which preferences are over "lotteries" whose outcomes are valued. As Savage (1954) showed, this leads to the individual have a "subjective prior" that is naturally interpreted as the individual's "beliefs." A correct theory of action merely (!) extends beliefs to an inter-subjective setting that is naturally affiliated with sociological theory.

As for (b) above, economists were so adamant in identifying "rationality" with "self-interest," that Parsons never had the temerity to suggest otherwise. The closest he comes in SSA is to say that ethical issues could be a "constraint" on rational behavior. It was not until behavioral game theorists showed clearly that "rationality" is completely compatible with altruism and other forms of inherently ethical behavior that a theory of action that bridges economics and sociology could be productively contemplated. I hope that sociologists today will participate in such a project.

Hard read but an important work
By John W. Burns
"Structure of Social Action" , written in 1937 is an important work for anyone who desires to understand Talcott Parsons explanation of the functioning of social systems. The need to have an integrative perspective of society, one that deals with culture, social instituions and the economy is of paramount importance. Parsons' theories are of great value in this effort. However, his writing is particularly dense, at least in part one which deals with the theory of social action. How one can compress so much intellectual material into a single sentence is astonishing. Part I of this volume required several re-reads to comprehend his points.
The remaining sections were easier to digest. In these sections Parsons uses four authors, Durkheim, Weber, Pareto and Marshall to trace the development of Western society as viewed through their eyes. It has been several decades since I studied Parsonion theory and the reading of this work helped me put current issues, social, cultural and economic into a new perspective. I found the later sections of the book, those discussing the four authors perspective surprisingly relaxing, in that they moved me from the micro analysis of today's social environment to a macro plain thereby providing a wholistic perspective. This wholistic perspective reduced the wroiling and turmoil I experience in my limited attempts to put current social and economic issues into an understandable framework.

Essentials of World Regional Geography, by Christopher L. Salter, Joseph J. Hobbs, Jesse H. Jr Wheeler, J. Trenton Kostbade

The third edition of this text builds the story of each region using contemporary concerns and historical themes to create a complete picture of our ever-changing planet and its people. The authors help students understand what aspects of a place give it identity and personality by detailing what features make it newsworthy now and what features might make it critical in the 21st century. This book pays strong attention to the phenomenon of globalization. This perspective has been prompted by the almost world-wide financial crisis that began in Southeast Asia in 1997, swept much of Asia in the following year, and then rocked Russia in 1998 and Brazil in 1999.

Show Stopper!: The Breakneck Race to Create Windows NT and the Next Generation at Microsoft, by G. Pascal Zachary

The phenomenal success of Bill Gates and his Microsoft Corporation hinges, above all, on an ability to look to the future. Not content with holding a bulging share of the market for software applications, nor with dominating the crucial operating systems business by virtue of its DOS and Windows programs, Microsoft is always looking to the future. And the future for Microsoft now goes by the name of "Windows NT." A software innovation of the first order, NT could redefine the standards for computing throughout the world, into the next century. NT endows inexpensive personal computers with the capabilities of giant mainframes - yet without sacrificing the inherent flexibility and appeal of PCs.

Amazon.com Review
Showstopper! is a vivid account of the creation of Microsoft Windows NT, perhaps the most complex software project ever undertaken. It is also a portrait of David Cutler, NT's brilliant and, at times, brutally aggressive chief architect.

Cutler surely ranks as one of the most impressive software engineers the field has ever produced. After leading the team that created the VMS operating system for Digital's VAX computer line--an accomplishment that most would regard as a lifetime achievement--he went on to conceive and lead the grueling multi-year project that ultimately produced Windows NT. Both admired and feared by his team, Cutler would let nothing stand in the way of realizing his design and often clashed with his programmers, senior Microsoft management, and even Gates himself. Yet no matter how involved he became in managing his 100-programmer team, he continued to immerse himself in every technical detail of the project and write critical portions of the code himself.

Showstopper! is also a fascinating look at programmer and managerial culture behind the Microsoft facade. The portraits of the men and women who created NT not only reveal the brilliance of their work but the crushing stress and the dislocating effects that new wealth had on their lives. For some team members, the NT project ultimately destroyed their marriages, friendships, and virtually every human relationship outside of work. Showstopper! also reveals the uncertainties, false starts, and blind alleys that dogged the project as Microsoft repositioned NT from an improved OS/2 to something that would ultimately challenge both OS/2 and Unix for the title of the world's most powerful operating system.

From Publishers Weekly
Released in mid-1993, Microsoft Corp.'s Windows NT software is arguably the best attempt yet at a universal operating system for personal computers, allowing PC users to open a file, move text or graphics, calculate a row of numbers and run several word processors, spreadsheets and other applications at once. With Windows NT (which stands for New Technology), Microsoft chief executive Bill Gates hopes to extend his dominion, with NT serving as the foundation for everything from desktop systems to corporate information networks. Critics, however, observe that the hardware required for NT is expensive and note that a forthcoming Microsoft operating system, Chicago, may eclipse NT. Wall Street Journal reporter Zachary tells how Microsoft wizard David Cutler and his team of programmers, working intensely for five years, overcame technical snafus, thousands of bugs, workplace skirmishes and collapsing personal lives to create Windows NT. This is both an enlightening primer on the management of complexity and a rare behind-the-scenes look at the cutthroat software wars.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
Wall Street Journal reporter Zachary has produced a well-written saga of the makings of a high-tech product. The characters in the story all seem as if they've jumped from the pages of a Hollywood script, including wacky workaholics but mostly millionaires, all of whom delight only in computer challenges, not everyday life. Yet somehow the tale of Microsoft's drive to bring Windows NT to market, at a $150-million and 250-employee cost, seems to be missing the passion of some other recent accounts of newly minted business successes. Maybe it's the subject matter; the beginnings of a new operating system claiming to herald the information highway are perhaps too far removed from most Americans' lives. Or maybe it's the fact that silicon valleys, whether in San Jose or Seattle, Boston or DuPage County, have lost their dazzle and allure. Still, it's a good read, for Zachary has done his homework well. Barbara Jacobs

Excellent Read if you are interested in Software Development

I am a beginner to the programming. it helped me a lot with a lot of interesting insights into the programming and the life of a programmer through this novel story of creation of a mammoth operating system called Windows NT.
helped to better understand the design cosiderations, priorities of a modern day operating system like NT, complexity management in a large scale software development project by controlled chaos and also gives an interesting insight into the inner workings and life at microsoft.
though this book won't go into a lot of technical details, gives very interesting technical anecdotes where ever appriopriate. As mentioned in the some of the reviews above, it focusses on the people behind the NT even with their personal details, with two chapters devoted to the NT's chief architect dave cutler and also about scores of other people on the project.
