Not too splashy but solid and scholarly

Susan Burrows Swan was the associate registrar at the Winterthur Museum and studied needlework, Americana and women's history for years.
I have so many books on needlework and am sorry to say this one is a glut on the market because it's very inexpensive. A contributing factor of this is that it's too full of b&w photos. Our modern readers (including me, often) demand everything in close-up, rich color. As a result, I think this book is ignored too often. But this isn't fair. I studied the bibliography and notes so carefully, I found a typo: on page 235, the author of Needlepoint in America is listed as Hope Hanely instead of Hanley. This book deserves better because it is thoroughly researched and entertainingly written. The chapters are as follows:
1. Plain Sewing, Plain Housewives
2. Molding the Accomplished Miss
3. The Golden Years of Needlework: The Age of Craftsmanship
4. Diversions for Genteel Ladies: The Age of Accomplishments
5. To Make a House a Home: The Age of Domesticity.
Ms. Swan lovingly moves through the century and a half period giving great insight into the daily life and struggles of all classes of women, not just the wealthy, highborn. The connection between usefulness and beauty in "women's" work is an interesting thread (excuse the pun) throughout the book. My sense is that good work was greatly preferred over fast work. So there was a standard to be worked up to that did not mean filling the dowry chest with many, many items but only the most carefully stitched items. There are a great many new books on historic needlework, samplers and schoolgirl embroideries. When read with the one, the glimpse of life in America 2 centuries ago becomes more real.
