About the Author
William H. Brown is emeritus professor of chemistry at Beloit College, where he was twice named Teacher of the Year. His teaching responsibilities include organic chemistry, advanced organic chemistry, and, more recently, special topics in pharmacology and drug synthesis. He received his Ph.D. from Columbia University under the direction of Gilbert Stork and did postdoctoral work at California Institute of Technology and the University of Arizona. He is a coauthor on ORGANIC CHEMISTRY, 10e (Cengage Learning).

Christopher S. Foote received his B.S. in 1957 from Yale University and his Ph.D. in 1962 from Harvard University. His scholarly credits include Sloan Fellow 1965-1967; Guggenheim Fellow 1967-1968; ACS Baekland Award, 1975; ACS Cope Scholar, 1994; Southern California Section ACS Tolman Medal, 1996; President, American Society for Photobiology, 1988-1989; and Senior Editor, ACCOUNTS OF CHEMICAL RESEARCH. He was Professor of Chemistry at UCLA.

Wrote for organic chemists by organic chemists

The information was not laid out at the progressive rate that should be in a introductory textbook. The book makes certain assumptions that cannot be picked up upon unless there is prior background in the organic chemistry world. The authors skip around and try to explain certain concepts before they were initially introduced. Peers of the authors would have praised the textbook, but the students had trouble reading and understanding it. That's why its...The book was written for organic chemists by organic chemists.

Spotty Effort

The second edition contained incredible errors regarding mechanistic organic chemistry, many of which were corrected by the third edition. No doubt, these errors were taught to a significant number of students, and have resulted in some ribbing of the authors by their peers. Nonetheless, the third edition still contains significant errors. Bright students will find those errors confusing, as they contradict what they learn about pKa's and acid/base chemistry within the text.
Text information states pKa values are for the conjugate acids of bases listed in tables, and this further confuses students, who assume the molecules listed are the acids themselves.
Incredible leaps of logic must be required for students to take sparse detail in the text and apply them to complex problems in the problem sets. Although the problems are enjoyable for Ph.D.'s in the field, they miss the mark regarding beginning students. I find the problems relevant and amusing, but they are often advanced or graduate level. In contrast,example problems in the text are quite simplistic.
It appears that the text attempts to address biochemistry, polymer and medicinal chemistry to some level - but must sacrifice content in the core areas of organic chemistry in order to satisfy the unwritten rule of a book of dimensions of 1.5" x 8" x 10" for the publisher.
The sidebars were a reasonable attempt to humanize chemistry. University academics are still scratching their heads as to why they continue to have trouble interesting students in chemistry - they need to look close to home regarding text and laboratory material. Both seem to provide an exercise in futility for U.S. students. Scientific method is taught in high school, and promptly forgotten. Logic and flow is missing today.

The author is trying to jump around on the concept he is trying to explain. Sometime, author used a long paragraph to explain a concept while at the end the point is still not clear.Examples in the text are not given in a consistent manner which causes lots of confusion to reader.
Some important concepts are not presented in the text, unsymmetrical substitution in the conjugated system for example.
I would recommend reader to read the book critically and do expect that things in the book are not 100% correct.

Replacement

I purchased this book years ago only to have it disappear later (we've all had that experience!). This purchase was a replacement, which should give it a high rating from the beginning. In any case, this is one of the finest publications on the subject ever and in my opinion deserving of further editions or updates. If you and your family enjoy games, but are getting tired of the usual, then this book is for you.

The definitive book on the supject

I have yet to find a better book on this subject, bar none. Not only are the games themselves explained, but also how to play them, how to make them, and how they came to be. I bought it when it first can out and have referred to it countless times over the years. Lavishly illustrated with photographs and black and white illustrations, I have enjoyed reading about specific games as well as just thumbing through to see what catches my interest.

Something of a classic, I think

When I was young, my Peanuts collection wasn't filled with huge, omnibus editions covering all aspects of the famed comic strip. No, it was made up of a series of 'Weekly Reader' books, perfectbound hardcovers that reprinted various strips from throughout the history of "Peanuts".

And foremost among them, the only one with which I would never part, was "Thompson Is in Trouble, Charlie Brown". It has always stuck in my mind as much for its memorable title as for the contents. And the contents are pretty darn solid. This is Charles M. Schulz from the early 70's, at that point a master of his craft and at the height of his powers.

Many different storylines are touched upon in this volume. Of course, the titular story is here; seeing Snoopy on a mission for the "Chief Beagle" to find the elusive Thompson. But there's also a great extended baseball storyline (Lucy loses her spot on the team to Snoopy - she doesn't take it well) and a story concerning Linus' reaction to learning that the latest book by Miss Helen Sweetstory, "The Six Bunny-Wunnies Freak Out", has been banned. It's even got the moment when Linus decides to call his new little brother "Rerun".

But my favorite in this collection (indeed one of my favorite "Peanuts" storylines of all time) is a Summer camp story (the second appearance of Marcie) in which Peppermint Patty reacts to meeting Charlie Brown's crush, the little red-haired girl, in a way you probably wouldn't expect.

Okay, let's face it, pretty much any collection of "Peanuts" strips are worthwhile. But this one seems to me to be just a bit of a cut above other small collections. Page for page it beats out a lot of larger volumes, showing the great range Schulz displayed during this particular era of "Peanuts". It's a perfect capsule look at a specific point in time.

Plus, it's got such a cool title.

The other meaning is the author's adventure in framing a speculative scheme of ideas which shall be explanatory of the historical adventure.

About the Author
An English mathematician and philosopher, Alfred North Whitehead provided the foundation for the shool of thought known as process philosophy. With an academic career that spanned from Cambridge to Harvard, Whitehead wrote extensively on mathematics, metaphysis, and philosophy. He died in Massachusetts in 1947.

Creative Platonist's Perspective on History and Civilization

There are four parts to this text: "Sociological," "Cosmological," "Philosophical," and "Civilization." The first part is a history of how ideas, especially moral ideas, have influenced the progress of civilization. Whitehead is by training mathematician and by nature a philosopher, not a historian. As a consequence, he covers a great deal of historical ground at a high level of generality which, in Whitehead's case, I consider a virtue. He has a beautiful, long-term perspective; his account of the transition from a world in which slavery was taken for granted to one in which it is no longer legitimate, and the role that the ideas of Platonism and Christianity played in that 2500 year transition, makes me quite optimistic about the long-term possibility of humane progress in the world.
I describe the first section in depth because it is among the more accessible pieces of Whitehead's writing. The remainder of the book calls upon his unique metaphysical perspective to some extent, and is thus more of a struggle for the casual reader. It, too, is beautiful and valuable for those who are willing to learn how to read Whitehead, but it is not easy. Buy the book for the first part, then if you like Whitehead's highly idiosyncratic view of reality, train yourself to read the rest of the book.
Personally, although Whitehead has fallen out of favor of academic philosophers for most of this century, I think that his work is more likely to be read 200 years from now than are most other works written this century. Whitehead is definitely thinking of the big picture with a certain serene timelessness. Far more people should be exposed to his 20th century articulation of the eternal search for the True, the Good, and the Beautiful (and the Adventure).

The Ideas Are Still Adventurous

Whitehead was the foremost twentieth-century advocate of Process Philosophy--he called it "The Philosophy of Organism"--the conviction that reality is composed of processes rather than of substances or matter.
Students of process thought frequently focus on Whitehead's major work, _Process and Reality_, sometimes to the neglect of his other books. But Whitehead's thought was, fittingly, in continual flux; and _Adventures of Ideas_, written after _Process and Reality_, contains new themes which, some would say, provide needed correctives to some of the notions in Whitehead's earlier books. _Adventures of Ideas_ is also considerably more readable than _Process and Reality_. It should not be passed over.

Excellently written. I was somewhat fan of Whitehead's philosophical ideas before I picked up this book. However, since I started reading this book I have become quite fascinated by his works. I recommend this book for all who seek knowledge or would like to further their command over making an inquiry into pre thought process.
