Review
"Overall, I think the chapter model is excellent. In particular, I like the Chapter Outline, Chapter Goals, and the ’Before You Begin’ sections. Many students in non-chemistry majors general chemistry classes are oriented at either medical school or engineering, and such students tend to be very objective-oriented. Having the outline and goals spelled out for them will help them to focus on the material. It will also tend to help students who have difficulty in determining what they are supposed to be learning in a given chapter."

"I particularly like the way the sample problems are broken down into ’strategy,’ ’solution,’ and perhaps most importantly, ’comments.’ Too often, in my opinion, students lean to solve problems in general chemistry by ’pattern-recognition.’"

"I find clear explanations, and many of the graphics are well chosen and cleverly crafted to support the explanations. My experience looking at introductory chemistry textbooks is that usually graphics add points of interest but contribute little to the primary concepts. Here I find the graphics constitute part of the instructional fabric."

"I especially liked the (Chapter Goals). It helps the student focus on the subject at hand, and lets them know where they are in relation to what they are trying to accomplish. Also, the references back to specific topics, in this chapter or that page, were extremely valuable to a beginning student."

Lots of bells, whistles, and smoke screens
By A Customer
I found this text to be very difficult for my students to understand. It approaches the subject of chemistry in a very disjointed way. Many steps are left out in the problem solving examples. The students were totally lost on the concepts without lecture. The CD-rom is a nice addition, but the text should be self-explanatory. Several errors have been found in the text, as well as contradictions of facts. More time should have been spent on the text itself, instead of all the bells and whistles. For example: Chapter 8 was quite confusing, as the authors write electron configurations in numerical order instead of fill order. This made it very difficult for students to follow. The authors approach many subjects in a unique way that completely throws the students off course. I highly recommend Silberberg or Brown. I used Silberberg's book in lecture, and the students comprehended the material well. I spent a lot of extra time in class trying to undo the confusion caused by this text. The only thing I liked about the book was the test writing software that came with it, but that does not make up for the difficulty the students have with the text.

Get 4th edition if you can
By P. Cornell
4th edition of this book was quite superior. Well written and coherent. Upon changing the edition from 4th to 5th, editors, it appears, have torn out pieces of text in a random manner. The only new material added were some new color pictures (yeah, let's use as much graphics and color as possible, that'll drive up the price of the book). The purpose of such "editing" escapes me; the result is an inconsequent and disjointed text which is very hard to digest.

If you're getting this book for a class, see if you can use the 4th edition. If you are getting it for your personal reading, definitely get the 4th edition. Chemistry doesn't change that much.

Not a good textbook, makes chemsitry harder than need be...
By BaPuters
My suggestion: Get Chemistry, The Central Science textbook (available here on amazon), as an adjunct to this text, if you must have this text for your class. The Central Science text is actually in English and will help you understand it.

It is poorly written, full of typographical errors which can further confuse the already flustered student (not only for words, but many formulas, examples, and problems have errors as well). For about 160 dollars, you'd think the publisher would be able to afford an Editor!!! It's audience isn't college freshmen, it seems that the author's assume you've got your Master's degree in Chemistry... the book is full of chemical jargon and assumption of knowledge that a first semester Chemistry student has no way of grasping.

I took Freshman College Chemistry twice... I had a difficult teacher and a more difficult text. I ended up getting Chemistry for Dummies, the Standard Deviants 3 VHS Chemistry set, and the most helpful and beneficial, the teaching company's High School Chemistry VHS set (which is helping me even in organic), all available here on amazon.

Not even my current Organic Chemistry textbook is as difficult to read as is this text. You almost can't get by in class using this particular textbook without suppliments.

It does come with CD-Roms, but they also are full of jargon and assumtions that you've understood everything that they're telling you.

If you can, don't buy this book, or take another class with a different author or textbook. Even taking another class at another college or nearby community college would be worth not having a class that uses this textbook (which is what I did for Chemistry II, and the different book, "chemisty, the central science" was actually easy to read and understand)... an A the first time around is what I got and what happens when you can actually understand what you're reading!
