A great text, but I definetly wouldn't read it for fun.

This text has a lot of diagrams, pictures and graphs that help the reader understand the material more fully. Also well written and easy to read. The diagrams for respiration were especially helpful.

One of the worst written books ive ever read

I used this textbook in a class taught by one of the authors. The arrangments is designed to make it easy to skim, that is the first few pages of each section summarize the sectioin, with each new section going into more and more detail. However this makes the book very hard to read in a good flow. Depending on the level of your class, yo uwill almost invariably need to know more detail than in the first few pages. Also, the text and metaphors used are terribly written and often times sentences jsut flow badly and lead to ambiguous sentences. However, the book covers a very broad range of topics in pretty good detail. so i am giving it a modst 3/5 stars. By the way, I got a 3.5/4 in this class so i am not just complaining out of sour grapes.

Just for Me

I got this book from library years ago.
I was taken by the practical way Mr. Baldwin made spaces livable for his clients while taking into account how they really lived and the spaces they had to work with.
This book was also written before what I call the " sledge hammer" approach to decorating that we have become accustomed to seeing on DIY networks.
Before questionable " flips" and
before so many million dollar properties we see on TV became " rental while away" affairs. I am always taken by how many luxury real estate agents on TV speak of renting the properties they show. Makes me wonder if anyone can REALLY afford the over the top houses builders are building while so many in our country are homeless.
Anyway, I will be happy to have
Mr. Balwin's book as part of my house keeping library. I need his wisdom in my life again.

This is a review of the 1972 edition of BILLY BALDWIN DECORATES with a Forward by Cleveland Amory. Tellingly, it is dedicated to his late mentor Ruby Ross Wood (who headed the first department store decorator department and was the ghost-writer for THE HOUSE IN GOOD TASTE). For the uninitiated, some of the most striking aspects of the book are the still-stylish rooms and still-valid advice. One of the Fathers of American Decorating, Billy Baldwin gives his thoughts on interior design illustrated by drawings and photos, in black & white and in color, of his projects. The photo reproduction quality is not to the standards of today's glossy coffee table books, but the content makes up for the short fall. Chapters are Taste and Logic in Decorating, Rooms to Live In, How to Work With A Decorator, The Elements of Decoration, The Bones of a Beautiful Room, Decorating for How and Where You Live, Your Own Personal Stamp, and The Big Question of Change. Each chapter also has informative sub-chapters.

Some of his most famous projects are featured. Readers can draw their own conclusions as to the similarities of two of the most admired -- his own small studio apartment in a modern high-rise building on Manhattan's Upper East Side and Cole Porter's apartment in the Waldorf Towers which housed is late wife's collection of French furniture. Both iconic Bachelor Pads have inspired countless imitations, rightfully so. Although Mr Baldwin claimed that "if you can tell I did a house, I didn't", his sense of style was unmistakeable and a good lesson to us all. This book is a must-have for everyone interested in residential design.

About the Author
Dr. Eugene F. Brigham is Graduate Research Professor Emeritus at the University of Florida, where he has taught since 1971. Dr. Brigham received his M.B.A. and Ph.D. from the University of California-Berkeley and his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina. Prior to joining the University of Florida, Dr. Brigham held teaching positions at the University of Connecticut, the University of Wisconsin, and the University of California-Los Angeles. Dr. Brigham has served as president of the Financial Management Association and has written many journal articles on the cost of capital, capital structure, and other aspects of financial management. He has authored or co-authored ten textbooks on managerial finance and managerial economics that are used at more than 1,000 universities in the United States and have been translated into 11 languages worldwide. He has testified as an expert witness in numerous electric, gas, and telephone rate cases at both federal and state levels. He has served as a consultant to many corporations and government agencies, including the Federal Reserve Board, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board, the U.S. Office of Telecommunications Policy, and the RAND Corporation. Dr. Brigham continues to teach, consult, and complete research in addition to his academic writing. He spends his spare time on the golf course, enjoying time with his family and dogs, and tackling outdoor adventure activities, such as biking through Alaska.

This book is widely, and rightly, regarded as the best and most accurate biography of J. Edgar Hoover. Without an axe to grind, Mr. Powers presents the man, warts and all, in the most believable version of him among all the books existing on Hoover and the FBI. This is the gold standard.

Learning a lot about history

As stated by other reviewers here, the author of this book takes an even-handed approach to his subject. Hoover comes across as a complicated, highly talented person and his achievements are not slighted nor are his failures ignored. I enjoy learning about history through biographies of famous people. This book gives a picture of the USA during the 20th century, describes the issues that concerned Americans. Surprise -- they were similar to today: Breakdown of family; lack of moral and religious guidance for youth; and violent crime, among others. I think Hoover may well have been the right man for his times, doing a job that needed to be done. Not a perfect man, but his overall achievements on behalf of the nation were admirable.

Anatomy of a textbook

Students already familiar with vertebrate anatomy will probably find this a useful reference, however students who are learning about vertebrate anatomy for the first time will likely be a bit frustrated with the book. Often, long wordy paragraphs describe structures rather than having an emphasis on diagrams. Material and terminology is frequently introduced without stating function or relevance until later on. Diagrams are only in a few different colors and usually lack spatial depth, which I personally found difficult for understanding the 3 dimensional layout of many oddly shaped structures. There are no photographs making identification of real life structures a bit of a challenge. There is also the occasional mislabeled diagram, but those are likely being remedied in the next edition.

I'm a bit disappointed at the organization of this book and it's emphasis on descriptions via text, however it is useful once you gain a good understanding of the material. The text goes into a nice amount of detail and covers a lot of material. However, if I had a choice of textbooks to use form my anatomy course, I would likely look at something else.

Comprehensive and clear

This book is well-organized and clearly written, and includes some truly fascinating revelations about the vertebrates, especially relating to biomechanics. It is, however, really too encyclopedic for undergraduates to read cover to cover. As a supplement to a lecture course, I find it excellent; if the lecturer expects students to learn most of the material from the text alone, they are in for a difficult time. The main difficulty is that the most important material is not necessarily emphasized in the text, so that the instructor using this text must be clear about what main points students need. As a reference for further study after class, and to look up things not understood the first time, this book is great. As a primary teaching tool with no outline or emphasis to guide study, there is simply far too much information for a one-semester undergraduate course.

This early Higgins novel is an excellent choice for dramatization. The story of a daring Nazi commando raid into a small English village in 1943 has some surprising consequences. The prelude to the actual landing is staged in German and English scenes, perfectly suited to radio-style dramatization. Nazi generals with thick accents, an undercover IRA assassin using a lilting brogue and a German agent in the guise of the perfect English country woman offer excellent roles for the talented cast. It started quite slow but then I wasn't used to Jack Higgins's style of writing at first. As I read on then it became more and more interesting. Despite this being a semi-fiction and true story, the Irish wit provided moments of comedy in the midst of a serious and suspenseful story.

Definitely worth reading.

A JUNGIAN ANALYST SUMMARIZES JUNG'S PSYCHOLOGICAL IDEAS

At the time this book was published in 1981, Mary Ann Mattoon was a practicing Jungian analyst; she has also written Understanding Dreams, Jung and the Human Psyche: An Understandable Introduction, Jungian Psychology After Jung, etc.

She wrote in the Preface, "Jung produced a great body of writing during his lifetime. Unfortunately, much of it is difficult for many people to read... My point of view combines the Jungian clinical approach and the empirical approach of academic psychology: those of a Jungian analyst, trained at the C.G. Jung Institute of Zurich... and an academic psychologist ... the combination of these two approaches has strengthened my appreciation of the capacity of Jungian psychology to lead to a profound understanding of the human psyche." (Pg. xi-xii)

She notes, "Jung's openness to new ideas reflected the nondogmatism that is expressed in his oft-quoted statement, 'I am not a Jungian.'" (Pg. 7) Later, she states, "Despite all the problems, it seems clear that the concept of synchronicity is valuable as a daring attempt to explain certain phenomena for which no rational explanation is possible. Even persons who challenged experiences that aroused Jung's interest in and sustained his conviction about synchronicity could not entirely discount the possibility of the phenomenon." (Pg. 149)

She points out, "empirical support for Jung's theory of the collective unconscious is found in the fact that people in different parts of the world who were not in communication with each other 'invented' the same artifacts. One example is the pyramid, which was conceived of in such widely separated places as Egypt, Thailand, and Mexico." (Pg. 47)

She observes, "The concept of complexes was so central to Jung's ideas that, initially, he labeled his body of theories 'Complex Psychology.' ... 'Complex' and 'Jung' became so closely associated that even the inferiority complex, which was identified by Alfred Adler, has been thought by many people to be a discovery of Jung's. Historically, the term 'complex' originated with Theodore Ziehen, a German psychiatrist... Although Jung did not originate the concept, he refined it and devoted considerable effort to the detection and analysis of complexes. This work led to the adoption of the term in general psychology." (Pg. 115)

She points out, "Jung had little to say on the subject of homosexuality. However, he hypothesized that in a male homosexual the heterosexual libido is tied up with the mother so that sex cannot be experienced with a woman. In such men masculinity is underdeveloped, that is, only partially conscious, hence, it tends to be projected, and the object of the projection is another man... Jung had even less to say about female homosexuality, but he seemed to assume that many female homosexuals seek the mother in the partner." (Pg. 222)

This is an excellent overview of Jung's thought, that will be of considerable interest to anyone studying him.

The boyish people who want to impress anyone by thinking turn out to be big losers the harder they fall

The cross examination of the big notions that never solve what is going on is just a matter of sorting out brown chicken, brown cow, for someone who has a boyish interest in being so much smarter than people who consider themselves highly educated. My own introduction to the intellectual types of elites took place at the major universities where the Unabomber got his degrees. Aside from brown chicken, brown cow, there are many levels of intensity for people who allow themselves to be crazy about how events get sorted out for many wars and weeds in the hundred years that this book never dreamed of.

Chapter 3 of this book considers meaning in history. By 1967, I was familiar with a song by Bob Dylan called
